Big Epp
Hello! What sort of hook do you prefer to use for a mop fly? I've read they are usually about 1 inch long, and most of the pictures look like a more round hook, similar to an octopus hook. I've tied some up already using the hooks I have on hand, but I'm curious as to what hooks you prefer. As an aside, I'd really like to win the "coolest lure" contest this year, and I'm hoping a complicated, intricate pattern like the mop fly will be my secret weapon...don't tell anyone! Anyfish
I haven't ever tied one, but looking at pictures, it looks like a scud hook of some size. I think these would give you a better eye instead of the octopus style hooks. Hope it helps.
JayFishing
I like using a Dai-Riki #135, size 12. I have also found car cleaning mitts at dollar stores in a variety of colors to use for my mop flies.
Big Epp
Thanks! I'll look into the hooks mentioned. I tied some up using Aberdeen hooks, octopus hooks, and some other random hook I found. I've been using some really think yarn stuff I found at Hobby Lobby and a microfiber duster I got from Walmart. I love all the different colors available!
JayFishing
Try all the hooks. When it comes to fly tying, I always say, "Learn the basics, and then bend them. Get weird, because you never know what's going to work until you try." Also remember, sometimes, simple is best.
