Sticking plastisol to Elaztech?

Recommended Posts

Let me preface this with it is winter and I can’t fish very often.  I’m going nuts.  I made up 700 jigs, swimbait and tube heads a couple of weeks ago.  Now I am messing around with plastics.  I make my own hula grubs and decided to put some skirts on other baits.  I normally use Mend-it or my hot knife to sitck them together.  I want to put skirts on TRDs but can’t get them to stick.  In addition to what I have mentioned I have tried Krazy glue and Super glue gel.  So far nothing is working.

Have any of you successfully tried something like this?

Not sure about adhesives, but I do know that Elaztech will melt standard plastisol into a puddle of goo if they come in contact with each other for any length of time. Not sure if you really want to mix that chocolate with your peanut butter. I'm guessing this science experiment isn't going to work.

I would say if you' re planning on using those brush hog style baits with a Texas rig you could get some offset EWG hooks with the extended  shank   (VMC VANADIUM BASS EXTENDER EXTENDED SHANK EWG WORM HOOK  or similar I believe Gamakatsu might also make one )  and tie a bigger barb on the hook by the eye to hold the skirt in place and possibly another barb behind the first one to hold the brush hog  in place .   If putting them on a jighead just do the same if it doesn't have adequate keepers for both .

For the tail skirted Ned rig you could try making a barbed keeper an inch long out of a piece of a small thin paper clip to push thru the skirt into the tail of the TRD to hold the skirt in place  .

Making a round bend on one end of the wire and folding it over at 90 degrees and a barb at the opposite end would prevent the skirt from slipping off the wire when attached to the worm

Thanks for the ideas.

If your trying glue together elaztech and plastisol baits it is going to make a sticky melted mess overtime. They are not compatible with each other. If that is not a concern then maybe try a cyanoacrylate glue like Krazy Glue, it might work. Traditional PVC glues like Mend-It or Fix-A-Lure wont work on the elaztech.

As I mentioned in my original post, I have tried Krazy glue.  This is not intended for long term.  I know what it does even to pvc boxes.

You've tried a hot knife, but how about a candle flame to briefly start melting one and then the other for a fusion that takes less than 5 seconds. Tomorrow I will try that method adding Elaztech to plastisol parts like I do hundreds of lure parts to form unique shapes and actions.

Yes I tried a candle.  It didn’t work either.

I guess the chemistry of each is too incompatible, which is the reason they say not to mix the plastics together. I did it once and had a mess. As for myself I could never see the advantage of using Elaztec lures - durability not withstanding. The biggest thrill included within my fishing obsession is discovering unique lure designs that catch most fish species.
