Open Pour Molds for Beginners?

Recommended Posts

I am brand new to soft plastics, and I do not have an injector or a lamination block, or even any molds, so I am limited to purchasing open pour molds. I don't care if the molds are silicone or aluminum. What molds would you guys recommend for me? I am trying to stay affordable, so not like $150 molds, I just want to be able to make my own soft plastic swimbaits. I don't need to worry about purchasing plastics, I am just going to use my thrashed plastics to start with. Thanks!

I also forgot to mention, I would prefer to have the molds make a 3.5-4.5" swimbait in the style of the Megabass Spark Shad, which is my favorite soft swimbait.

Lurecraft, which is part of LurePartsOnline(LPO) has a lot of open pours molds that are relatively inexpensive and possibly what you are looking for. Here’s a link. Give them a look and see if they may have it.

Alright! Thanks man! Any possible sub 50$ aluminum molds?

As mentioned, LC is the way to go for open pour molds and they have a ton of swimbait models.  God knows they have a bunch of my money.  LOL.  I'm sure you can find something very close, if not exactly like the spark shad.  BTW.......that is my favorite swimbait as well.  Simple yet very effective with killer action!

Once you start pouring and learn a few things, you  WILL want more molds.  No doubt about that.  The great thing about a swimbait mold is they are super easy to pour.  No major appendages, claws, etc.  Just one pour and done.

Also when buying molds, try to stick to the baits that YOU will use and stay away from starter molds.

Good luck!

open pour swimbait molds on Ebay

I've used them from Ebay and they produce some nice baits for under $30 with free S/H.

Here's one of three sb.s I catch fish with - this one from an open pour mold:

white swimbait

..and another but from an injection mold:

Plaster of Paris is another way of making copies:

Injectors on Ebay are very cheap as are single pour injection molds. A gal. jug of good plastic goes for $44 free S/H and will last for years.

Lurecraft and M-F have a huge variety of colorants.

For many simple designs making your own molds is as cheap as it is going to get. I have made 100's of molds over the years  and easily can say if one takes their time they will get get solid baits.  I have made plenty with finishes as good or better  as something from some larger named companies.   Two piece molds aren't much harder to do and more complex styles can result.
