BAMA BASSER
I've started making my own jigs and was wondering about the kind of skirts some of you prefer. I have used silicone skirts on a few but have some rubber skirt material odered. :
Markell
BAMA BASSER, Welcome to the site. Where in Alabama are you from? I like Silicone because of all the colors and patterns that are available. The rubber is hard to find at the momment but makes a good skirt. I also like to use Lumaflex. Right now, I use a combination Silicone/Lumaflex skirt for my jigs. Silicone: good color options. Easy to work with. Rubber: Breaths better than silicone but limited color options. I have found that the color tends to fade over time with rubber. Lumaflex: Breathes better than rubber with limited color options. Can be dyed. BAMA BASSER
Thanks for the welcome and info Markell. I'm form north bama close to Decatur. I saw the lumaflex somewhere what kind of material is it and does it come in strips like silicone and rubber.
Markell
Living Rubber has Lumaflex. It is Spandex. Lumaflex comes in large rolls. I put two screws in a piece of wood and wrap it around the screws. Once I have the thickness I want I wrap a twist tie around the material which gives me a way to pull it through a collar. The diameter is a little small for me(1680 Denier). That is why I combine it with other material. It makes a great spinnerbait skirt just by itself. Does not fade, very durable. Some like it, some don't.

Celticav
Buy a roll of the natural and dye it, save you a ton of money. You'll find lumaflex is a superior material for skirts, it will still look great when the skirt collar is rotting off. JIM
BAMA BASSER
Thanks for the tip celticav. Do you use clothing dye to dye it with or something else also I looked at some of your photos and was wondering if any of those were lumaflex and I want to say thanks again for helping the new guy
Celticav
I use Lumadye but Rit works great. JIM
Coley
Rit dye will dye Lumaflex, but it bleeds badly. I have found regular plastic worm dye and Bombay ink work extremely well. The ink comes in many different colors. Coley
Celticav
You have to set the dye with Rit no matter what your using it on. Vinegar will usually do fine, the salt the directions say to add is mandatory to set the dye. Bombay ink is very excellent...I haven't tried soft plastic dye yet, gotta try that one, Coley.
