I saw a photo of them done in size 6, 8, & 10 with a copper wire wrap on the shank with a metal bead head. Said to be great under the ice. These were from a guy in Canada and no one I know in my area has seen or fished them on ice. I'm interested in trying to tie a few or even buying a couple to test out this year. Gr8flyz Posted December 17, 2004 Report Share Posted December 17, 2004 Maze, there is an old trout pattern called a "Brassie" which is just as you describe. I've tied hundreds of them, but have never used them for ice fishing. I would think they would work fine. The Brassie is tied with plain copper, brass or gold wire, but there are coated wires available in various colors that could also be used, so you're not limited in what you can do with them. I've always tied the Brassie type flies with a peacock herl head, and a little hackle as a throat, usually some type of speckled hackle, which looks like the legs of many aquatic insects. bc trout boi Posted April 17, 2008 Report Share Posted April 17, 2008 i know that up here in the north...well at least in southern BC brassies are killer i've actually tied some with small diameter electrician's wire. i dont know the gauge but its pretty small, and i've tied blue, green, yellow, etc color flies...and the price couldn't be better. and on that note, i buy wire from the hardware store at like a dollar for a couple freakin miles (ok some exaggeration) and strip the insulation Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
