NJFishRGuy
I've used a blender to convert already granulated salt to flour-like consistency with good success. I was inspired by the idea of saving money by buying a 40 pound bag of water softener salt and grinding it up myself, so I bought a $5 Braun coffee grinder on eBay. I broke up the salt into coffee bean-sized chunks and went at it. It appears, however, that the salt chunks chipped the plastic nut on the blade pretty badly. So I concluded that maybe I have to start with smaller chunks? Those of you who use coffee grinders to make floured salt, how fine is the salt when you put it in the grinder? And how do you get it that fine to begin with? Any advice appreciated...
charkins
I use salt I bought from Lure Craft. It is a little finer than table salt. It works real well in the grinder. Cal
Fish_N_Fool
I just use pickleing salt it is a fine grain already and has no additives that you dont want. Then I just use my blender to flour it. I only grind about a cup at a time, anymore overheats the blender any less turns it all to dust. charkins
Oh yea, I have been heating my salt in the microwave before grinding it in the hope of eliminating some of the humidity in the salt. I believe that it makes the salt suspend better in the plastic. Could be my imagination, I don't have any tests to prove the theory. Anyway, water and plastic don't mix so who knows. madbass
I just buy non-iodized table salt from the store and grind that down with a coffee grinder. Store it in an air tight plastic container. Works good for me.
Senkosam
You can see the salt smoke rising after grinding. That's super fine.
