Spinnerbait arm lengths?

Recommended Posts

Is there a formula/ratio you folks use to determine the arm lengths? I purchased some spinnerbait heads with arms in them. I know the head-to-eye one is a fixed length but what about the length of the blade arm? I am building single colorado blade ones. Thanks.

Hi, Huebert

The spinnerbait arms lenghts are very important. I believe it requires alot attention. About 90% of my blades are short arms. Because the lakes I fish at in California a basically open water. There is no timber what so ever!. Now when I cut the blade arm, I estimate were the blade on the swivel going to end up. I like the blade to be just above the hook. I make all my spinnerbaits with a 4/0 GAMA HOOKS. ( Just to give you an idea) Know I make by own blades, I throw alot of 1 oz blades with a single willow (4size) or Indiana (3.5) in deep water, like 12-17 foot. Now when I go to the Delta ( not often ) I take blades with long arms, because I throw them around wood and other junk. It seems to snag less. However; the most snag resistant blade I thow is a Twin Arm spinnerbait. Goes threw the willow very easy. For night fishing, I throw a single Colorado ( 4-6 size) short armed. Good Luck

Like Dink said the arm length is important. I only use long arms for 2 reasons, 1. it is much more snag proof. 2. a different vibration.

Varying the arm length will effect the vibration as well as the possiblity of getting hung up. I fish around docks, brush, timber and grass so it decreases the frustration of staying hung up.

Good luck and cross their eyes.
