finlander
Anyone make anything using from buckets to coolers to house their large baits?
out2llunge
I use a milk crate and vinyl downspouts cut to 12" lengths. Each crate holds 20 (?) pieces of spout and every bait gets there own home. The best part is the hooks don't foul like they do with some of the commercial big bait boxes. I've since made a bunch of bigger baits that stick out somewhat, but still not a big deal.
Big Splash
Cool idea! It wont collect rain in the bottom either!
out2llunge
If I know I'm going to use less than a full crate, I remove some tubes and that makes room for some plano boxes with hooks, leaders, etc.
finlander
The first container I used was the milk crate with the downspouting. I had a small container in the center for leaders etc. I outgrew that. Now I have a deep white bucket that has 17 lures hanging inside. And I have more that won't fit. I looked at the Plano box at Gander today. It had nice racks but wasn't real sturdy. I have a cooler the same size as the Plano that I looked at, and I could put plexiglass racks in. Plus we could use the cooler as a seat too. Wheels on it would be nice too to save my back.
out2llunge
Hey Fin check out this thread, http://www.muskystriker.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=442&highlight=tackle+box there's all kinds of details regarding a big number of options for tackle boxes similar to what you might be looking for. finlander
Boy that was a long read! Thanks for the info though. I'm glad I passed on the Plano. Seemed a little shaky. Never seem a Flambeau or the other. I have heard it's heavy when filled. I'll keep trying things til I'm happy. Thanks O2L! Hope to order your DVD set soon. Want to make something for Canada that'll work, something from wood. See ya!
jerkbait
After trying a lot of different things the plastic tubes stuck in a soft sided coolder worked best for me the one I use most has pockets on top for map and sides for leaders blades etc. Also has a shoulder strap and will aonform to the size of the contents. I like to stick a couple plastic boxes down in the ends also. Saw a thread on a woodworking site about making interlocking plywood sections. I thought that sheet acrylic would work and be clear as well. Will post a link if I can find it again. Jerk
out2llunge
Jerkbait, don't use acrylic! Use lexan instead. It might cost a bit more, but if the temps are ever around the freezing mark or colder, the acrylic will snap on you, especially if things get even a little stuck in the divders. This I know from experience. Up here where it's like minus 30 tonight we've been using 1/16" lexan for those types of dividers.
finlander
Did a search for this petg material that Dunwright uses on their $150 tackle boxes. It is expensive for the thicker sheets. Even the tubes that are 2-3 " diameter are $10 per FOOT at this one sight. I did not look up Lexan. Meant to stop by the Home Depot to check on their prices. Should've stopped as it will be snowing hard thru Sat night here. Winter weather advisories posted. Oh where is the spring?
jerkbait
Thanks Lunge I have a bunch of Lexan for lips and stuff. I have the bag stuffed with swuare downspouts now but would like to make some clear dividers before next mont when the fun begins down at Cave Run, Ky. Jerk! finlander
Went to Home Depot today looking at Lexan sheets but stumbled on a 'box' for the baits. Happened to be a Stanley tool box, about 14" deep with an inside tray. Has wheels and a pull-out handle. Around $29. Don't know how it will perform when it's loaded down with baits though. I will need to make dividers for it too. Just thought I'd pass along an idea...
