Help me with silicon jig skirts

Recommended Posts

Picked up an ear ball lure mold and want to star making some of those silicon skirts for them. Tried my hand at bucktail but I need some serious practice with that. I'm having issues with finding the skirt materials. I want to make something like this. I cant find any info on the bands though. All I can find is the band that just clamps around the skirt. I like the look of what I think is called a hub skirt where all of the skirt points back from the jig and none of it goes forward. I found what it looks like I need but for some reason I cant find it on any of the real deal tacklemaking sites. I only found what I am assuming is cheap Chinese ones off of amazon ebay and alibaba. There is no info on how to make skirts with them, what tools to use or what size they are. They will be used on large saltwater jigs. I would also like to know where I could find those large fins that would be a nice touch but not as important.

Thanks

You can just buy silicone squid heads and cut the heads off.

Or you can buy skirts like in your picture.

I buy them locally here in Alaska all the time. Sometimes in bulk bins bought individually and sometimes I buy the wally whale or other brands packaged 2 skirts to a package.

If I'm needing a bunch I'll order them from John Beath at https://www.squidlures.com/skirts.html

What size earballs are you making?

I'm making a version we call yhe GumBob in 10, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, and 32 ounce sizes.

I've thought about getting a bigger mold as well but, so far this range of sizes is working really well for us.

Just pored a bunch today 2- 8 oz. New jersey is much shallower. We go 3 miles offshore and your still in 60ft of water.20241012_084417.thumb.jpg.c54227d767bf984c29f810e0ac528fb2.jpg

It's not about the depth.

It's about holding in the tide.

We can have close to 40 feet of tide differential from high to low during the years worst tides.

You need heavier weights to hold in that kind of current.

Most days 8 oz isn't going to hit bottom except during slack tide.

Some days you can't hold bottom with a 3 pound cod sinker.

Didnt think about that but the tide swings up there are crazy. I got to witness it this year on vacation.
