WidowMaker
My buddy asked me about oiling mold hinges.....how often should it be done. When i got my first mold i did not oil it during use. On my second mold i did oil it and after pouring several hundred jigs with both (i bought the second one a few months later) of them i could tell a BIG difference between the one that was oiled verses the one that was not. The oiled one was much tighter when opened than the other one. I usually oil my mold hinges every hour and a half on the smaller Do-It's and every hour on the larger ones. Even if they may not need it done quite that often. I will take a Q-Tip and wipe the old oil off and apply more oil. Plus i think it helps keep the lead from sticking as bad if it happens to get down around the hinge area. Also if the oil starts smoking i will back off and let the mold cool a bit......ive never had a mold to warp by doing this. How often do you guys do this? Richoc
I oil before pouring, then as needed. I now use mobil one, had some left from the oil change on the compressor. Boy what differance, way longer lasting and takes the heat better. I am using 30 weight.
WidowMaker
Come to think of it all ive ever put on them is THREE IN ONE OIL. It is kind of thin but i figure with it being thin it will start to smoke quicker than the heavier stuff. Plus it wipes off pretty clean after im finished. Maybe ill try some heavier stuff and seee how well i like it.
Richoc
Not just heavier it is synthetic. Seems way smoother and takes the heat way better.
LedHed
I use a high temp grease - a little dab lasts a long time.
