Need Help With Rabbit Strips

Recommended Posts

I've recently started tying up some jigs using cross-cut rabbit strips. Some of the strips lay out nicely, making the jib look puffy and full. Others seem to lay down completely and have no full-ness. Laying almost flat on the hook shank.

I want to achieve the fullness type jig. Is my problem the way I'm wrapping or is it my material? I was wondering if a straight-cut strip might help out.

*Thanks in advance*

Sounds like it may be a material problem. Is it happening with just one color of fur? Are you trapping the fur under your other wraps? How many wraps are you making around the shank?

Using straight cut skin probably won't help the situation any. It can be used without too much of a problem but doesnt lay down quite as nicely.

You'll want to get the magnum strips wich are cut wider..But I don't think any of them are cut a inch wide. You may want to buy whole hides, and cut them your self.If you choose to do this, don't lay them flat on a table to cut.If you do,you'll cut all the hair off.Clamp the corners of the hide to a table, and pull the hide tight, and cut. This allows the hair to move out of the way of the blade, and leaves it attatched to the hide.Due a search for dyed rabbit hides, you'll come up with several companys. There is one out in Oregon that I've dealt with that has good prices, free shipping and beautiful hides..Nathan

Nathan I don't think he was looking for inch wide strips. I think he needed hair an inch long on the strips.

Good info on cutting rabbit strips the only thing I would add is dont cut all the way to the end of the pelt stop just short leave maybe 1/4" or so on the ends. That way you can several strips then clip the ends and keep them together for future tying. Always cut from the hide side not the hair side of the pelt.

Most large craft stores carry rabbit pelts but don't have very many colors to choose from.

I'm not looking for inch wide strips. I want the material to be inch long. So that when it is palmered along the hook shank, the material has a full inch or so if measured from the hook shank.

I understand with the cutting of the hide issue. I was looking to skip a step and thought I could find material to suit me needs. I have bought material from flyfishusa.com and was not satisfied with the length of the material. So I'm looking for an alternate. I was trying not to cut my own hides. I was thinking that perhaps there was another material available to tie the jigs with, perhaps with a longer fur then rabbit??

Thanks
