apb
I have a one piece, 9 foot rod that I am considering turning into a 2 piece rod to make transport a little easier. What is the easiest way of doing this? Are there down sides that I should consider? Thanks! Andrew
Mattman
If you, or the person performing the work, are a qualified experienced rod builder there should be no drawbacks. In a nutshell, you need an oversleeve that is the exact fit for the area where you intend to break the rod. You need 6x the diameter at the break point for your overall sleeve length. You need to wrap immediately at the opening to prevent splitting. Also wrapping where the oversleeve and the tip section join.
apb
Thanks! Any furel materials that are better than others for this purpose? Andrew
Mattman
I'm not sure on that one. I've never done it. I know for repairs, fiberglass works better. But for doing a ferrule, you are probably going to want to stick close to the same modulus of graphite that your original blank is. I know the guys that take blanks and make multi-piece rods out of them buy two identical blanks to do it.

clemmy
you also might want to contact the various blank suppliers like mudhole and see if they have a broken or factory second blank of the right modulus, you could get it alot cheaper that way as all you need is a little bit...i know some guys buy these up and make ice rods out of them... as far as sensitivity goes, you can use larger guides, but you might want to go with lighter frames as they won't dampen as much...just be sure to mock up with the reel you plan to use to make sure your guides don't extend too far out so as to rub the line....for handle, it depends how you hold the rod/reel...ultimately the idea is tyo have contact with the blank itself for maximum sensitivity...possibly the fuji reel seat that allows you to touch the blank on the bottom might work if it's strong enuff for your application...
