Quickly Heat Larger Volume of Plastic

Recommended Posts

I have a presto pot and stirring system with PID temp controller and when I need to work a larger volume I use it. That said, I know plastic guys have used hot burners, stoves, hot pots, etc. to heat plastic and you must stir or it will burn. I do use a heat plate to keep small batches hot while I’m working so I can do multiple shots without reheating in micro. Heat plate on high and set your Pyrex or Anchor right on it. Never had any troubles.

Personally, I haven’t use a hot burner to heat but wouldn’t be afraid to if that’s what I had. Start with a gallon first. Use safety precautions(ventilation) and a thermometer.

Microwave is the only option really if quick is a requirement.

Well heating six 8 cup Pyrex in the microwave sucks. The only way I’ve lessened the suck is to have 3 microwave at once- 2 - 8 cups per. It’s still a pain. I’m pretty sure I need an industry grade agitator tank or else I’m playing with microwaves all day

I know one guy up here in Canada running some large Rite Hete pots to dip musky baits in and he's microwaving plastic to get it started. Problem is the time it will take to completely cook a few gallons of plastic will take forever.

Even going to heat exchangers most likely won't work as they are only good for roughly half their volume in one shot and if you let them sit for more than a few minutes you're burning them up.
