MACHEAD
I have a couple ?'s for you rod building guru's.Im looking to build a jigging rod with a medium heavy back bone and a fast/very fast tip action.I jig for large laketrout that see a lot of fishing presure and have a very lite bite thus i need a rod a that is very sensitive at the tip in the casting rod style. Is it posible to buy a 6' rod blank and cut 6 inches off the butt section and not hurt the strength of the blank and not kill all the action in it.Also what is the best kind of reel seat for casting reels that is light and sensitive i.e.graphite,aluminum,upward,downward ect, ect. Also does it hurt anything to put over sized guides all the wat to the tip we fish in very cold weather and all the rods seem to have small casting guides and they freeze up to easy. Could you guys recomend a good rod blank for this that is light weight and very sensitive at the tip for extremly lite bitting fish that wont break the bank.I have been looking on the mudhole site at there rainshadow IM8 blanks that are on clearance are these blanks any good?is there a better blank out there for the money?i cant seem to find a blank under 6"that fits what i need.(i really dont know where to look either)any help or tips would be great thanks. ckarren
Are you looking for a small rod for ice fishing? -Corey
MACHEAD
no im looking for a full size rod (about 5'6" or 6') id like to build my own so that i can put the oversize guides and custom handle. The reason i dont want a stick any longer than 6' is so i can A:use it in the boat and on the ice. B:i prefer a shorter rod for vertical jigging presintations we use.i get much better feel in a shorter rod.
ckarren
Check out this address http://www.berkley-fishing.com/products/Detail.cfm?PassProductInfoId=2772&PassPrevious=1090&PassLevel=2 I have two of them for ice fishing for Lakers work great. If you read what they say about it, it is everything you are looking for except only 36? so it will fit in an ice shack. You are not going to get a 5?6? rod in an ice shack. For years, the highest quality graphite ice rods have simply been broken rod blanks cut down to an ice-fishing length. But things have changed. Mr. Ice Fishing, Dave Genz, captain of the Ice Team, has helped us design a rod series that flexes just like a six-foot rod, with solid graphite blanks specifically made for ice fishing. No need for bobbers anymore, the solid graphite blank delivers all the sensitivity you need to detect and feel when a fish takes your bait. These rods have it all - a balanced, lightweight design, more parabolic curve, and five chrome-plated stainless steel guides with a smaller, lighter outside diameter and bigger inside diameter to reduce line freeze-up. The future of ice fishing is here with the Dave Genz Signature Lightning Rod. The rod series endorsed by the Ice Team, the only North American organization devoted to ice fishing. Have you thought about getting a muskie rod and cut it down. I have used my muskie rods jigging for lake trout in the summer. Good luck, -Corey
