Arky vs. Round head Jigs

Recommended Posts

IMG_3472.thumb.jpeg.b0e0da303419ee99386bb3c3d06313db.jpegHi I recently started pouring the do-it flat eye Arky (ARK-3-AFC) and they’re great but I feel like they snag up in rock easier than the same weight round head jigs I’ve been tying up from Boss (mini ball head).  I can usually get them out but it takes extra effort babying it out the rock and if I’m fishing from shore it’s especially frustrating.
I mostly fish rocky points and chunky granite rock piles in Southern California reservoirs.
I’m considering getting the Do-it Weedless round jig with the same 60 degree flat eye hook I’ve been using to see if it fishes thru those situations better but am curious if anyone else has used that mold or has experienced what I’ve noticed?

I usually fish from my boat but really noticed this fishing the same lake two trips in a row from the bank, the first day I used a 1/2 oz Weedless skirted ball head jig all afternoon and never lost it catching several bass. (Pictured on top ) The next trip I went thru several arky jigs and snag interruptions eventually tying the round head back on and was way more efficient picking apart the areas I was fishing.
I should note that I’m using twin wire weedguards for both.

Thanks

John

Here is why I fish these type of jigs a lot around rock.

I'm the original creator of both the puffball jigs and lions collar jigs

I've build custom jigs since 1977

I can build them from 1/64 oz. to 1 oz.

And if you want custom work in these jigs give Cadman Jigs a look on his website.

If you want to tie puffball jigs just watch some of the various tutorials on YouTube.

Even our very own member Smalljaw did a video on tying this type of jig many years ago.

Cadman does great work no doubt.

But I'd bet money others also make and sell these style jigs.

If it quality work in making the puffball jigs then either myself or Cadman are the top two manufactures doing this type work. Yes there are a few other that attempt to build them but there not even close to the work that I or Cadman can do.

I prefer you using Cadman jig as I showed him how to tie the puffball jigs I'm hoping he contacts me again in the near future so he can learn to tie the lions collar jigs next.

I'm retired from manufacturing after 48 years. I'm still pouring building and tying everything in house you can't beat quality when in come to doing it yourself.

I'm currently going through cancer treatment and it's curable but I've got major surgery ahead of me after chemo and radiation in late Feb.

Send me and address I'll send some in both puffball and lions collar jigs.

But again visit Cadman jigs website he do quality work.

I also know smalljaw ties some nice looking jigs but he not tying the puffball jigs correctly in his video. You never tie this type jig with the jig head down even if your weed guard glue in place. The correct way with any type jig your tying is hook and fiber guard in the up position tying with upholstery thread.

Tying this give you maximum flare with each of the thread before locking it in place. If you notice on thread showing in any of my jigs in the pictures. And the puffball jigs and lions collar jigs are all symmetrical in shape. Tying in either silicone or round rubber.

I'm not a video you tube person never have been.

Cadman learned in seven easy steps with pictures I sent him and he pick it up very quickly. I don't take credit for it he just keeps it up very quickly. His hook combinations make that jig that much better.

Answer to your question about ball head or arkie head jigs yes you will hang up way less in the rocks using light fiber guards and this style of jigs form 1/8 oz. to 3/4 oz. In both round head and arkie head Finesse jigs.

Do you think the puffball skirt keeps the jigs from getting down into the cracks between rocks?

When the jig is falling the skirt folds back when the jig stop or falls into rock the skirt puff out around the head acting as a cashion it works very will for arkie and ball head jigs. And with a light fiber guard .018 material adding in 9,11,or 18 fiber guard it makes it much more weedless in all types of structure.
