Arky vs. Round head Jigs

Recommended Posts

IMG_3472.thumb.jpeg.b0e0da303419ee99386bb3c3d06313db.jpegHi I recently started pouring the do-it flat eye Arky (ARK-3-AFC) and they’re great but I feel like they snag up in rock easier than the same weight round head jigs I’ve been tying up from Boss (mini ball head).  I can usually get them out but it takes extra effort babying it out the rock and if I’m fishing from shore it’s especially frustrating.
I mostly fish rocky points and chunky granite rock piles in Southern California reservoirs.
I’m considering getting the Do-it Weedless round jig with the same 60 degree flat eye hook I’ve been using to see if it fishes thru those situations better but am curious if anyone else has used that mold or has experienced what I’ve noticed?

I usually fish from my boat but really noticed this fishing the same lake two trips in a row from the bank, the first day I used a 1/2 oz Weedless skirted ball head jig all afternoon and never lost it catching several bass. (Pictured on top ) The next trip I went thru several arky jigs and snag interruptions eventually tying the round head back on and was way more efficient picking apart the areas I was fishing.
I should note that I’m using twin wire weedguards for both.

Thanks

John

If you want to tie puffball jigs just watch some of the various tutorials on YouTube.

Even our very own member Smalljaw did a video on tying this type of jig many years ago.

Cadman does great work no doubt.

But I'd bet money others also make and sell these style jigs.

Answer to your question about ball head or arkie head jigs yes you will hang up way less in the rocks using light fiber guards and this style of jigs form 1/8 oz. to 3/4 oz. In both round head and arkie head Finesse jigs.

Do you think the puffball skirt keeps the jigs from getting down into the cracks between rocks?

Jigmeieter let's see your best puffball jigs or loin collar jigs. Can you tie some up for us. In Blue Magic.

Only one other person I know that can tie these types of jigs. That's Cadman jigs.

I strive to tie my jigs to imitate what fish are actually eating so I have no need for fancy designer "Puffball " or "Loin Collar" jigs . If I snag and break off a jig I simply tie on another always having many on hand that's the beauty of tying your own jigs .

But that's just me ...

I'm with you on this!

Those puffballs look like a sea urchin. I don't think any fish species in my state eats sea urchins.

I honestly can't think of a situation where I would fish a puffball or lions mane jig. At least not for any species in my state.

Where can he order one of those molds if he wanted one?

Is it a stock mold from someone or a $$$$$ spendy custom job that takes months to get?

A link to the mold maker would be helpful.

Well he could contact me if he needed any it's simple to do.

But the guy from Texas may be a better choice. Viperxplures  might need the business.

Why didn't you just say it was a custom mold/lure in the first place?

Most of us are here because we want to make our own tackle.

The OP did say  he is looking for a mold to pour his own.

Lefty's Lure company  1977

The original Puffball jigs

Skinny bear jigs 1985

Pro signature series  jigs

We're the two oldest company still in business today.

Other companies that have pop up in the last 4 to 5 year making the puffball jigs

Frugal Lures Puffy jigs

Me Bs Lure company Puffball Jigs

And a hand full of you tube puffball attempted makers.

Don Iovino Star Burst Jigs No longer making them.

There one more want a be company called tight rope jigs also.

What does this have to do with making bass jigs that don't hang up in the rocks as much?

The OP is looking for a mold to pour his own.

Not your life story or who makes what jigs commercially. Obviously from your post lots of lure makers make and sell a version of the puffball jig.

I wish I could help the OP but, I don't fish bass or fish really rocky water.

Fishing uphill from shore on rocky bottoms is just asking for trouble . If your jig goes into a crevice between rocks you can't really easily change your line angle by moving the boat and pop your rod to free it . One thing you could try is to reduce your jighead weight as fishing uphill from shore you don't need as heavy as a jig to maintain feel as retrieving downhill in a boat .
