Amador
Can anybody explain this proccess? Can you remove the flexcoat over the threads and start over? If so how. Thanks for your input. Chris
Mattman
1) Remove the old guide. Use a razor blade and right on top of the guides foot, NOT OVER THE BLANK, cut the thread/epoxy. Peel all of that off. 2) Clean the blank. CAREFULLY use the razor or some other instrument to get the really high spots of epoxy off the blank. I get the edge of the blade under the epoxy and pry up. Wipe with alcohol. 3) Wrap new guide on. Put a spool of thread in a shot glass. Run the thread through a book to provide tension. Take a cardboard box and cut a V-notch in each end and rest the rod in the notches. Tape your guide on and after your thread has gone up the foot a bit you can remove the tape. 4) Finish. You CAN use 5-minute epoxy if you are in a jam. I use 5-minute when I do test wraps to play around with patterns and colors. You gotta be quick though. I'll brush it on, get a good thick coat, and warm it with a hair dryer while rotating the rod. That'll help it flow and release bubbles. Flexcoat or the other finishes are preferred. Clear Urethanes are also an alternative. I think there is a bit of a tutorial at Mudhole's site.

Big Splash
Great Info, Mattman.. I have to do this to one of my 10.5' steelhead rods before the spring thaw.
