OUTDOORSMAN
I'm looking into buying an on board battery charger for my ranger, but I have no idea what to look for. Do they charge your trolling motor battery while your running your out board or are they just a charger. What amperage should I look at. Mylures
Hi Outdoorsman, I don't know alot about chargers and amps and the like. I do have one suggustion though that might help. First off, check with a marine dealer about the size and amps you need and then ask about how they set up motor homes. While the unit is running it will charge the main battery and the aux battery. There is a one way switch between these batteries. It can charge both but if one goes dead it can't drain the second battery down. That way you always have at least one good one and can rotate them in an emergency. I am guessing that those small trickle chargers are the way to go. They keep the battery charged but do it slowly and the batteries last alot longer. Fast charging is hard on batteries. Hope this helps. If nothing else go to batteries plus or some place like that. I am sure they can help you or at least put you in the right direction. Ken Schmitz Mylures
Finger Lakes Bait Company
Outdoorsman, You want a charger that has at least 10 amps per bank. Dual Pro makes a very good unit. The charger does not work as you are running the boat. After you are done on the water you plug in your extension cord and the charger brings your batterys back up to power. The charger will automatically shut itself off when the batteries are charged. Keith
Maze
Do yourself a favor and check out the article on the In-Fisherman web page on a very nice do it yourself set up they've been using for a few years. Maze
OUTDOORSMAN
Maze, What article were you talking about? I found one about wiring two 12v batteries together. Is that the article?
