Pop
I am making molds with fiberglass resin and using a plastic swim bait as my master. Is there anything than can be used to keep the master from sticking in the cavity and to keep the resin from sticking to the bottom of the mold form? I did take Woodsacs advice and put vaseline on the sides and the resin shrunk away nicely. Would vaseline work on the plastic and bottom of the mold? What I am doing is making a wooden frame and then gluing Plexiglas type material for the bottom. I am able to make mold forms to fit the item being made. Much more compact. goldenarrow
you can use any kind of oil like pam I have even used olive oil when i was out of pam and i didnt really notice the diffrence. I bet if you didnt use anything it would be ok to because the resin has a tendancy to srink.
Pop
Yes, I agree that it does shrink, but the wooden frame is porous and the resin could bind with the wood. The resin does shrink around the master and sticks to it, and adheres to the Plexiglas bottom. I will try the pam and now that I think of it, maybe regular worm oil will work also. woodsac
You can use just about any release agent on the plastic. The problem is the heat from the curing process causes the plastic to become soft and pourous. That's what causes the plastic to stick Try using just a little less catalyst next time.
