Cummins_4x4
What is the best way to modify an existing mold? I want to change the tail on several, and if at all possible be able to return to the origional mold. The particular molds I am talking about are M-F molds made of a clear resin. Would RTV work? And be able to revert to origional? I figure someone out there has the answer. Thanks in advance. I'm glad to join this great resource. bigbasser
What I would do is take a few finished worms and cut of the tail you don't like. Then fuse the new tail on and make a mold out of whatever material you choose.
BigZ
I doubt RTV would bond to the resin without a suitable epoxy. If you are going to modify a resin mold, get out your dremel and start grinding. If you make the tail bigger than the original and don't like it, you could (theoretically) fill in the areas you gouged out with resin to regain the original contour. Good Luck! Cummins_4x4
Will filling in the areas you don't want plastic in with modeling clay work? At least for awhile. Want to make a few worms and test them before altering the mold or making a new one.
GB GONE
I think so but just test it for heat resistance. I've been wanting to do the same thing with one of my molds!!! If I come up with something, I'll let you know. Jim
woodsac
I've made molds out of Sculpey brand clay. I've poured directly onto the clay without cooking or sealing it without any problems.
Cummins_4x4
Thanks woodsac! I figured the truth was out there. That'll let me have a little time to decide what I really want and go from there. I appreciate the help!
BuMMeRBaits
The sculpey clay works well, I have used it to modify many baits and create other new baits. I usualy heat mine to get the clay hard and then spray on a good coat of High-Heat Enamel, I think that makes the lure come out a lot nicer. Usually though for modifications, I take my baits, fuse them togther (Glue, Fire, ect..) Pour up 1 mold of all of the mod's and then pour. I pick the ones that come out good and then pour up enough of those to make the molds I want with usually 5-15 baits per-mold.
