Coley
1.) You will need a pattern for your lip. You can get some here for free: http://www.luremaking.com/catalogue/download/making_crankbait_lips.pdf 2.) I like to cut my pattern out and using contact cement, glue it to the paper backing on the Lexan. 3.) Then using a bandsaw, I like to rough cut around the pattern. 4.) Using a disc sander, I like to do the final shaping on the pattern. 5.) Remove the pattern and the backing from the Lexan lip. Place the lip in the bait, line up and tape off with masking tape. Leave excess tape hanging over the edges of the lip. Remove the lip and tape it to a piece of cardboard. 6.) Measure from the back edge of the tape ( which is the front of the bait ) to the front of the lip. On this lip the meas. was about 1 1/2". I want my line tie to be LESS than half of this distance. I made a mark at 11/16" from the front of the bait. 7.) Now measure the width of the lip at your first mark. This time you want the exact center of the lip. Make a mark here and drill a 1/16" hole through the lip. Now, using the same 1/16" drill bit angle the hole on the underside of the lip to about a 45 degree angle. 8.) While doing the drilling, drill a 3/32" or 7/64" hole in each corner of the lip. Also, I use a dremel cutting tool to rough up the Lexan inside the taped off area and cut a small notch in the back center of the lip. 9.) Bend the eye of your twisted wire into a 90 degree angle and place it through the hole in the lip and bend it up through the notch and onto the top of the lip. 10.) You need a groove in the bottom of the mouth of the bait for the twisted wire to lay in. The easiest way I have found to do this is, mark the center of the bait in this area and put a scrap piece of Lexan in the lip slot and drill straight back into the bait, keeping pressure against the Lexan. 11.) Check the fit of your lip, your done. Coley
