Cory Nicholson
I've just started pouring my own jigs. Sometimes the cavities don't completely fill with lead. Is that mainly because the mold may be too cool? Or am I pouring wrong? Would you maybe recommend slightly warming up the mold with a small torch. Thanks.
cz75b
Mold needs to be hot, consider treating the cavities with a mold release and experiment with different alloys, some swear by pure soft lead, others feel alloyed lead with tin and even antinmony fill cavities best. Midway USA makes a mold release spray that works great or carbon from a flame. Preheating a mold with a propane torch helps or just cast a few times without hooks to warm things up. If you preheat with hooks or inserts, you can ruin the temper and create breakaway hooks.....I sit the mold on top of the bottom pour furnace while the lead heats up.
