I have been pouring over both this site and the soft plastics forum and all I can say is WOW :!: The information I gained here is more than I could ever get by buying a book. I have taken a large leap in the learning curve. Thanks to you I?m am able to learn from all your experiments, trials and mistakes. I have just finished my first lure and would like you to tell me what you think. The lure is balsa with a foil and tissue paper. I want to thank Husky for all his info on this one. Also thanks goes out to Tally for his tutorial on plastic dip. I would like to say that I also had problems with not using virgin lacquer thinner and didn?t understand what was wrong until I read some later posts. You might think about making a correction to the tutorial for the sake of new members. Thanks for all the other information that made making my first lure possible. I know the first thing you?re going to say is that the mid hook is located in the wrong place. It is a little farther back than it should be. Brain warp I guess. Anyway it swims with a wide wobble and tracks straight. I hope this one is going to be a killer on the small mouth. Thanks again everyone this is a fantastic site. I was a bit baffled about weighting but then I read a great post about weighing in water to come up with the correct amount. It sure made life easy. Well I took it out for about an hour today and pulled in two Largemouths in the local lake. Looks great in the water, plenty of flash and a wide wobble. I also tried to make the tutorial very specific so that anyone, and I mean anyone could follow it step by step and make the plastic dip. Under the material list the first thing I mention is the lacquer thinner and I will quote: "Lacquer thinner: I am sure that there is a number of thinners that will work but this one does work and is available at Auto Zone. Since then I know different, LOL :oops: they come in different flavors mild and hot. LOL :grin: Still an excellent tutorial. I never knew there was another way. LOL Swede, Thanks for the compliment and I'll try that. I've never heard of that before but I'll give it a try. I missed a couple of hookups today and I was wandering if having the middle treble back like it is contributed to it or maybe it was all the weeds. LOL Couldn't have been the angler. Just remembered something. Husky, Is there any way that you can keep the paper from coming up at the edges? I needed to maybe give it another blast of epoxy to get rid of the lines. I did sand them down but not enought I can see them running along the top. Do you put your paper down with epoxy or do you use something else? Again thanks for the comments. I was a blast making it. When I started I cut out two so I'm working on the second one now.[/quote'] After you glue the foil/tissue done, topcoat the whole lure with Devcon or Etex. When that coat set, paint the back and belly and topcoat again. You shouldn't be able to see the transition line. I don't sand the edges at all.
