Dink Mendez
Howdy, Just like to say Hi to all the TU members. How do I press in a scale look into foil before I glue the foil tape to the crankbaits. Also, how many coats of devcon is needed to get a good clear coat. Any other ideas on foil crankbaits would be very much appreciated.
finlander
Lay a piece of netting material, and there are many different patterns to choose from, under the foil and run you finger over the top of the foil with some pressure. A dowel/rolling pin will do the same.
Art Brush
Hey Dink, Here's a link to Hiro's tutorial on how-to scale the foil prior to putting it on the lure using a scoring tool. http://www.tackleunderground.com/board/kb.php?mode=article&k=15 Tight Lines, Shawn

BobP
I'll try that netting trick but wonder how the scale pattern lasts while you're smoothing the foil out? I apply smooth foil tape to the crank and then texture it with a 1/4" bolt. Run the bolt threads across the tape at 45 deg to the axis of the lure, in both directions. You have to clearcoat the textured foil with epoxy before spraying acrylic colors since they won't adhere to the foil otherwise.
Camel1918
I'm new at this but I've been doing it by hand after the foil is on the lure. I use a semi dull pencil, dental pick or dull awl. Something that will leave a sharp line but is not sharp enough to cut through the foil. I use regular kitchen foil I spray glue on. I then do it by hand. This way I can do gill slits and have a better idea of the proportion of scales I want for that lure.
baitmaker2
an old ratchet handle makes some nice scales also
