earthworm77
Chris, I've heard you talking about it, were can I check it out? Is it in your opinion better than LC and MF? What is the price per 5 gallon bucket? I'm looking for saomething I don't have to mix as thouroughly as LC
alsworms
Hey Craig, Calhoun has worked just fine for me. It doesn't settle nearly as much as Lure Craft, and has very little smell. MF is by far the best plastic because you hardly need to mix that stuff at all, but for the price Calhoun is very workable. It is a hair tougher than Lure Craft 536. Nothing that a little softener won't fix. The price is about 1 buck per pound; half the price of L.C. or MF. You can call them at 1-706-629-9077. Ken Parker is the guy I spoke with at extension 107. SRPLASTICS
We get our 55-gallon drums for about $375.00 ea, this does not include shipping which acyually adds another $150.00 to the price, but it is still more affordable than the others, hence, your profit margin just doubled. We have settled for using Calhoun exclusively, and have steered many hand pour companies to buy their plastic. They are very good and sending samples for you to try, but believe me, you really dont need to do that, take it from Chris and I, YOU CAN'T GO WRONG. Mercury
I agree, the plastic is Clearer when cooked, easy to work with after softener is added. and much more affordable than anything else.
basskat
The only problem I have is it takes me forever to use 5 gallons. That's enough to last me 3 or 4 years. I only pour for myself mainly. I wish they'd sell it by the gallon.....kat
alsworms
They do sell in gallon sizes (that's the smallest amount they sell in). However, you're better off buying the 5-gallon size, even if it takes awhile to go through it. It costs like 15 bucks to ship a gallon via UPS, whereas a 5-gallon jug is around 20 bucks. You may as well make that initial investment. At a buck per pound, you can't go wrong. Also, the plastic will never go bad. It will be there when you need it, even if it's 5 years from now. Fireball Lures
Just called Calhoun yesterday and got a sample coming, they quoted me a price of 1.50 a pound, or 60 bucks 5 gallons. I will see how this stuff works first hand. Nathan
Pop
Hi Nathan, did that price include shipping? If not it seems as though the price has gone up. MF is $86 plus change and only $26 more than MF. Because I don't pour alot I think I will go with the MF. Anyone have any recommendations between soft and super soft? Thanks, Pop
Fireball Lures
No that didn't include shipping, I use mainly MF supersoft for all my worms and lizards. The supersoft is a great product far better in my opinion than lure craft just got 5 gallons from mf at $119.00 shipped Nathan
kidlizard
Nate, We tried Calhouns, and I liked the smell, but it seemed to have a different texture while pouring. MF is abviously a very high quality plastisol, but when you can get a 5 Gal bucket from someone else for $49.00 shipped, you tend to sacrifice a little on the quality. I know everyone hates to hurt thier quality of product, but I dont see how a small time guy can make a buck spending that kind of cash on thier main raw material. In my opinion, 3G or Calhouns is the only way to go. If you add scent to the plasitsol, 3G feels about as good as anything we have tried. I would say you cant go wrong with either one. Pop
Just so I have my numbers straight. Calhoun 60.00 Plus shipping. 3G 49.00 including shipping. Does 3G have a web site? Or else how do you contact them. Thanx Pop
alsworms
I noticed that Calhoun has gone up in price quite a bit; still a lot cheaper than Lure Craft or MF. BUT....when you consider the price jump is from 1.00 to 1.50 per pound, it won't be long before they start losing customers because of the 50% increases. Maybe they're starting to realize they can get higher prices now??? As far as sacrificing quality, that has always been a big concern for me. I have never felt like I'm sacrificing quality by using Calhoun though. It's just as good as Lure Craft in my book; you just need to add a little softener. I wish I had the same luck with 3-G plastic because their price in unbeatable. Chris
earthworm77
Thanks guys, I'm going to check out the Calhouns. Appreciate the help.
kidlizard
Al, We have pretty good luck with 3G. It takes a little heat stabilizer (3oz/gal) but after that the stuff pours great. However its a must to add scent to the plastic. It does have more of an odor than any other we have tried. We are sponsored by Kick-N-Bass and we add it to all our products after we pour. Cant add it while cooking because it will cook out in a second. It really covers the plastic smell well, and out prostaff loves the KNB. You might want to ask for another sample from 3G and work with it a little more. If you can get it to an acceptable level, the price really is unbeatable. Also the heat stabilizer makes the pot clean up a snap. I ussually leav about a 1/4 inch in the bottom and it pulls right out in one big chunk the next day.......
