I will be going to Home Depot tomorrow and I wondered what I should get. What tools would you suggest, what type of wood and what size? Anything you can suggest that will help me make my first lure a success would be great. I look forward to reading your replies. Each lure maker on this site is unique. 1.What type of lure are you making? some are handcarved, some are made by machines, some are molded, etc. 2. Try using balsa and basswood as these are inexpensive and easy to work with. 3. What tools do you have already? I wouldn't buy a lot until you know what it is you in fact need. Its taken me a couple years now to acquire a lathe, bandsaw, drill press, etc...I only bought as a genuine need arose and now I use these about every day. Consider quality when buying. *I started out carving as this was inexpensive and it taught me a lot about how wood behaves and can be worked; however I'm still learning. Machines are dangerous...read the manuals and read a book on their use. I have at least one book for each machine and a couple about wood carving. I went to Home Depot and they did not carry balsa, what other type of wood should I use? I saw pine, maple, oak etc... What size board should I get generally? Balsa is very light and easy to carve but not sold at Home Depot try a hobby/craft store they have it. Lowe's carries cedar which is what a lot of Poe's are made of. Home Depot does not sell cedar but Lowe's has it for $2.30 for like a 1"x3"x8' section. Cedar is harder to carve than balsa but I like to use it. scoop10 Posted September 2, 2005 Report Share Posted September 2, 2005 Well, I will tell you that the thing that really got me to making baits was: _ I had been bass fishing for years. _ I saw the site of a "custom" baitmaker (many of the posters here make far, far better baits) and thought, I can do that. _ I bought a Dremel for another project. _ I got to playing around with a Dremel and a piece of wood. Today, I own a band saw, a belt sander and a drill press. But I could do all the same things I do with those with the Dremel, it would just take longer.
