Stainless Steel wire

Recommended Posts

A rookie question here, but exactly what type of stainless steel wire should be used to make the forms on spinnerbaits? I have tried to used the Stainless Steel "leader" wire, but it comes in a roll and is hard to get the bend from the loop out. Also, I find that this wire is very fragile and bends very easily. Should I be using something different such as Spring Stainless Steel Wire? Would that be any stiffer? Thanks again for any help.

I am using .029 wire which is available in preformed wire but the wire from head to R-bend isn't long enough in the pre-bent wire forms. I like the performance of the .029 wire. I know that that is small and they tend to break easily, but I have seen .029 wire on spinnerbaits that the wire doesn't bend as easily as the leader wire.

I use a lot what would be called the .018 stainless steel wire purchased from Barlows Tackle. It is the Mason Brand wire. Im well pleased with it because its an excellent wire. It bends really well without weakening or breaking.

Ive received a few batches with a bent spot in the coil but i still order it because it tends to be good wire. If its bent i just send it back.

Check out McMaster/Carr (they have a web site) ? not the cheapest but they do have a lot of stuff and they provide some interesting information about wire hardness. You are probably looking for "piano wire". They do sell stainless .in 1 and 2 foot pre cut lengths in different diameters (including .029) or you can opt for the coils.
