Ticking noise coming from Lowrance X-135

Recommended Posts

My Lowrance X-135 is producing a ticking noise and it is annoying the heck out of me. I emailed Lowrance and they just sent me back an email stating that human and fish cannot hear the soundwave used for sonar. I know this.

This ticking noise I am hearing sounds like to live electrical wires being tapped together. It has got to be spooking the fish. It is annoying. I first noticed it a couple months ago at a trip to Lake Powell. I jumped in the water for a swim and really heard it amplified through the water. I had my wife turn off the sonar and it stopped. Turned it back on and heard it again. Now every time I am on the water, I notice it.

I turned on my sonar attached to my trolling motor and felt the transducer (out of the water). I can feel it pulse with every ticking noise. The ticking rate increases and decreases as I change the ping speed. It is happening with both of my transducers on a 2005 boat.

I guess my question is, is this normal? I can't believe it if it is. The fish have got to be hearing this...

It's normal for any unit to make the ticking sound. You just don't notice it. If you slow the ping rate down you'll notice the ticking slows down. The ticking noise is the ping it sends to the bottom to determine depth, structure, fish, etc....much like the old sonar beeps you hear in the old submarine movies.

There's lots of us you beleive that fish pick up on this sound also. I turn all the electronics possible off when I stop to fish. The only time I leave a depth finder on is when fishing deep structure that I have to stay on top of. In shallow water you don't need it.

Hope this helps.

Both my X135 and X15MT click loudly. These newer modle Lowrance units do this. My older X75 and X85 didnt. I believe these newer units are more powerful and put out a louder ping. I try not to run both at the same time. When im on the front deck I can hear my rear transducer coming through the drain hole.
