Dungeonhawk5
Hi all.. Found the forums for the first time today, I have to say I am super impressed by the wealth of knowledge ive already found. Ive searched a bit, 6 or so pages back and not found anything on 2 part resin molds. I bought some at home depot today and am wanting to make a 2 parter. Does anyone have an easy way to do that? Heck it doesnt have to be easy haha. Thanks in advance, keep up the great work all. Here is a picture of my first ever molds I poured last night. hope im doing ok for just starting. Delw
To make the molds align together use those big marbles in your first half after you pour the compund place 2 marbels or 4 in each corner leaving 1/2" of space on the edge. make sure you put the marbels in at half depth so you have 1/2 of the marble stickng out. let it dry, pull the marbels out. Now take the marbles out and coat the mold with what ever you used to keep it form sticking. you will have 2 or 4 holes pour your second side. when you pull the mold apart and look at the 2 halves you will have female marble indentations on one side and Male indentations on the other side, this will align your molds pretty close. Hope that made sence Delw
Dungeonhawk5
i sent a PM to del, but id like some more takes too... his marble idea i think would work, but I thought about doing the glue the bait to the bottom, then pouring method, and this wouldnt work right? anyone else have any suggestions too? thanks again, del and others
Delw
Yeah you need ot glue the baits. some of these guys on here are whizz's on this stuff and can explain it far better than I. There is some posts on exactly how to do it.( with the exception of the marble part) Delw
Dungeonhawk5
ahhh del, your PM made sense to a degree...I get it now that the top piece will fill in the old marble hole creating a nice fit, what I dont understand now is how to get the first marble to only go halfway... if im putting them on the bottom of the pan, where the baits are, and where the resin goes, i cant have half a marble sticking out the bottom of the pan... Everything is crystal clear now, with that exception. Any other resin mold wizzes out there? or could anyone direct me to a 2 part resin mold post with good info? thanks again. nova
Try a piece of clay rolled into a ball and then cut it in half; put that at the bottom of the pan before you pour the resin. remember to not use too much catalyst as the heat generated will warp the mold and the 2 pieces will not fit together correctly. Dungeonhawk5
great idea nova. thanks a ton.. do you think playdough would work? or do you not think it could handle the heat? so if the resin calls for 10 drops per whatever, maybe only put in 6? somewhere in that range? i will try that, certainly
nova
Use sculpy clay. It hardens with heat. As far as the catalyst goes; it depends on where you live.(climate/temp) Good luck and let us know how you make out.
Dungeonhawk5
well.. all things said, it was a disasterous failure. first off a piece of advice - use gloves when working with resin haha... some of it didnt set up and i had to handle it... well i got it all over my hands, fingers etc... and WOW it doesnt come off... tried everything...goo gone, thinner, etc... finally found the answer in Oxy Clean... Wet hands just a little and run it in.. Wow thank god for oxy clean. Had to have the gf cart me all over cuz i couldnt touch anything. Back to the project. Well, the 2nd attempt hardened up GREAT... everytning was working well, it was fully cooled, so i ran a layer of vaseline over it all, and it was very very well lubed. Ran the 2nd layer of resin and it hardened up great... well, i couldnt get it back apart... I had to pry with a screwdriver and it split and broke everywhere. i did put foil in the corners and it didnt help at all... Any other suggestions? oh , also the clay didnt harden at all, and it was scupting, bake to set clay. Im frustrated... my first 1 piece mold was made from clear hobby resin and it turned out GREAT... this was a disaster. please give me a hand thanks guys.. and remember OXY CLEAN
nova
I use acetone as a cleaner, it's quick. You have to bake the clay to get it hard. First roll it into a ball and then cut it in half, then bake it. after that it's ready to use. I use marine grade resin. You'll have to mess around with the amount of catalyst. Remember to keep notes so you can repeat it.
Dungeonhawk5
it was setting up great, quick and easy.. just like i would want it to.. the clay, baked, yeah, that would have been smarter lol. still, how do you deal with the resin not coming apart... I really worked the vaseline in there well. i mean it hardly came apart at all... any idea how I can pour it without it just sticking so tightly to the bottom half? thanks
nova
You could try worm oil, but that can be thick at times. Try Pam spray, but wait for the bubbles to disipate before you pour the second part. The sticking of the 2 halfs can be a pain. It only takes one bare spot to join it all together. Dungeonhawk5
i just ordered a stick mold from del so ill stop trying to do a 2 part resin stik mold... i guess i can try something else... im having a hard time with a twister mold not pouring in to the tail all the way.. up in to the tip that is... ill try pam if i do attempt it again
GB GONE
Try using WD-40 as a seperator between layers of resin. It has worked for me.... Coat everything good though, one missed spot and.....your back to square 1!!! Jim
Dungeonhawk5
probably wont do the stick bait mold again, as i have one coming... but the twister tails are still eluding me... i dont want to have to pour the tail first then the close it up and pour the body, seems counterproductive. im pouring the plastic VERY hot and still cant get it down and up in to the tail. how do you guys with 3-5 inch twister/grub molds get them poured properly?
