charkins
I want to get started fishing swimbaits. All I have is a 4 inch shad type mold I got from LC. I rig it with a jig. Any ideas on which molds from LC or others that would be really good? What is the best way to rig them? What about the swimbaits with diving lips? I would appreciate any and all help on this broad subject Thanks in advance Cal
chiefdano
I am a saltwater fisherman so I use swimbaits, or shad tails, all the time. The way we rig them is either with a colored jig head, on a spinerbait, an inline spinner, a weighted arky type jig head, or texas style. And as far as jig heads go, well theres dozens out there now lie round, football, hot-lips, standing, shad head, and a lot more. do-it website has the most i've been able to find. and for molds, i dont know how you feel about making one, but a 1 part resin mold is very easy and since most swimbaits have a flat side, it makes it ideal. ragfly
What about two color pours? I am looking at getting a few custom aluminum molds made up so I can heat the mold to do the two color pour. Without heating the mold I think the first color would cool to quickly so the second color would seperate ( I am assuming this is correct). I am looking at pouring a modified Fin-s fish swim shad (7" and 9"). As for jighead molds DO-it has the majority of that market. But here is a tip, To payless for the mold go through Jann's netcraft. If Jann's doesn't have the mold they can order it from Do-it. I have done it a few times and Jann's has always been cheaper even on the special orders. charkins
I have one of Lurecraft's 4 inch shad body molds. It is made of rtv. I have successfully poured 3 color pours with no problem. Does anybody know how to rig a harness for a bottom treble hook for the swimbaits? Anyone successfully pouring their swimbaits with the weight inside? Anyone doing diving lips on their swimbaits? If so, how? If some of this is proprietary secrets, I don't blame you for not sharing it. Cal
bigbasser
Pouring a swimbait with a jighead inside is not real hard or real productive either. This is the way I did it. First I have a lurecraft 6" swimbait mold that is very similar to the bass assasin sea shad. I also had 1/2 oz lunker city jig heads that fit in the mold nicely. First jam a toothpick in the eye of the jig head and set it where you want the eye to stick out. Then when you set it you will realize that the hook is actually laying in the body cavity. You will need something to rest the hook point on. Get creative. I used small pieces of cardboard and raise the hook to your liking. Pour plastic and be careful around the jighead. It is not real productive. I strictly used one color pours on this but it did work and came out pretty good. A good thing about this is that after the bait gets messed up, you can use the jig head again if it is in good shape.
