TAE73
What I am lookin got find out is, after the first dip how long are you waiting for the second dip. I am wondering if I can speed through a bunch of one color. Then come back later that night or even the next day and dip the other color. What do you all do?? charkins
Well lets see what I can answer. After the first dip, you have to let the tube cool. Now this can be anything from a few seconds to a few minutes. The things that determine this are: how hot the rods are, how hot the plastic is, how long you dipped the tube. I set up about a dozen rods and dip them individually. By the time I have done all twelve, the first tube is ready to dip again. If you are making two color tubes, the first dip will be dipped the entire length and result in the tail color. The second dip is the tube body. When you dip 2 colors, the more rods you have, the quicker you can make the second dip. You have to allow time to heat up the second color plastic. One man can do tubes, but it helps to have a friend. Hope this helps. Calvin
staten island angler
Where do u get the rods from?
TAE73
McMaster Carr was the cheapest place I found. This is 6061 Aluminum rod multipurpose, nothing to special. Check out www.mcmaster.com and then type in page 3377. They usually ship that day and depending where you live it might just come next day. I know from the chicago office, to mid missouri is always the next day with standard ups shipping.
staten island angler
tae73, What thickness rod should i get and lenght?
TAE73
They only come in 6 foot long piece, I took them and cut them down to 4" long pieces and then rounded the head and smoothed off any burrs with a bench grinder. I am using 1/8" and 3/16" rods for crappie jigs. I would say 1/4 and maybe 3/8" for bass. I dont bass fish with tubes so I dont really have a clue. Just get the same size in the same inside dim's for your existing tubes.
charkins
1/4 inch should be about right. I use bolts. You can glue a big washer to the base of the bolt and they sit up nicely. My bolts are 5 inches long and I have them marked at 4 inches for uniform dips. Keep the questions coming and some of us will have an answer. Some of them might even work Cal
