Saugeye refusing Calhoun plastic?

Recommended Posts

First off let me say a giant THANKS to everyone here, this board is one-of-a-kind...All of the knowledge on here is truly amazing ..I haven't made a post yet because almost all of my questions have been previously covered!!! However today I believe I ran into a potential problem...

Ok so now to my problem:

I have been pouring plastics/making molds for about a week now, and I think I have finally got the hang of it...The action of hand poured plastics is truly remarkable...However I am experiencing some "potential" problems.

The problem is that S-eye's seem to "HitSpit" my soft plastics, this has occurred twice now within the last few days. On both occasions I will be jigging a grub along, then let it drop. About a second after I let it drop I will get a WHACK!!!!!!..I mean the fish will just BLAST the lure, however within a milli-second it will spit it back out...By the time I go to set the hook, it's to late.

Now I know some of you are thinking "well he's just experiencing some stubborn/smart S-eye"...I thought the same thing, however I consider myself an accomplished S-eye angler..And have NEVER experienced such quick "spits" in my life...

Also I am using 10lb fireline, and both "HitSpits" have occurred less than 6ft in front of me, in slack water...So water current/line memory isn't a contributing factor...IMO it seems like the Eye's can taste the plastic, and are quick to realize it's DEFINITELY not food...

Now I will be the first to admit, it may have nothing to do with the plastic, and everything to do with the fish...But I doubt it, cause I've caught well over 100 S-eye and never had them spit a lure like this...And it's really frustrating cause I know the hit I had today was from a BIG BOY :(

So my questions are: has anyone else ever experienced these symptoms? will scent additives/salt help?, Do most hand-poured soft plastics have that "plastic" smell to them? If so is there any way to get rid of it/cover it up?

Again thanks to everyone on the site...For a hobbyist/future lure company CEO this place is a dream come true :)

Are you scorching the plastic? That really gives it a funny smell and I bet a funny taste. I haven't tasted any scorched ones yet :D

The grape doesn't taste too bad, but the shad and crawfish flavored worms really are awful tasting. Thats on worms that aren't scorched.

Decades ago when I started worm fishing, I would bite part of a worm off to shorten it. That was when most were not flavored or salted. The only flavor available was grape. Since I started fishing again, I have forgotten and bit one of the worms once in a while. Bummer!!!

I've scorched a few batches before...And yeah, it stinks...However maybe I am heating the plastic too much? Some batches I pour when it is like corn-syrup, others I pour when it is almost the consistency of milk, at that point it is very smokey..Maybe this is why it smells/tastes bad?

At any rate my buddy got the darn S-eye today (23"). Probably the one that has been smashing my baits over the past few days..(caught it from the same hole)....This time it SMACKED his jig (store bought) & held on :(
