Mold materials

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I'm a little confused. From what I get

1.Resin is the same as fiberglass and produces nicely detailed lures.

2.Plaster work and is cheap but breaks sometimes.

3. Durhans water putty is stronger than plaster but is pretty good.

4. Aluminum is cream of the crop but expensive, I know because i have a ton of these.

5. Silicon is okay but can leave lures not that shiny.

6. What the FFFFF is RTV???????????

I've never made a mold before but am planning too. I would like to make some 2 parts and single sided molds. What are the +'s and -'s of each material. And did I mention, What the F is RTV?!

RTV is Room Temperature Vulcanizing. Term used for what you are seeing here for molding silicones that do not require oven cure.

Plaster is my specialty. Used alot of it in past years but now have started using Ultracal 30 which is plaster/portland mix and ALOT harder than plaster though I never had a mold break just pouring. Broke a couple by dropping though which isn't bad considering they are so easy to make and inexpensive.

I've never used RTV silicone or Resin to make a mold. Did try to use resin once about 20 years ago and melted down a tupperware container on the kitchen table  ...there wasn't any mold-making tutorials back then and I had to learn myself with alot of trial and error, mostly error. Took two years to finally learn how to make a good plaster mold from real critters :D . This site is a great thing for newbies to moldmaking and wish I would have had it back then!

I notice no difference in the capturing detail as compared to plaster. Gets all the fine lines and bumps, eyelids small toes, etc. Still using Envirotex to coat, first apply soaks in and seals, second coat is very thin just to release and give the shiny to the baits.

One thing about plaster and the first half of a two-piece mold...I mix the plaster/Ultracal thick. It allows exact placement of the master without sinking in too far and does away with the small sometimes foamy bubbles that like to stay on the surface.

I'm planning on making the gathering in April and had told Nathan I would give a molmaking demo if you guys want. I could have molds in different stages of completion like a cooking show and it would take about 30 minutes to an hour to show.
