psilvers
I am just getting into using powder paint and I have a couple of questions. Which makes the paint job last longer curing in an oven, or epoxy coating? ? If you use epoxy, what kind of epoxy? I am making jigs for saltwater fishing that will see some rocks and some teeth (hopefully!). Thanks for the help. Pete
cheesehead
If your powder coating already I'd just cure it in an oven. Epoxy is an extra step that will add more weight without adding more strength. Also oven curing your baits will be usable in less than an hour. with the epoxy coating you'll need to wait a few days. smalljaw
Just cure it in an oven, like cheeshead said it'll be ready to go in an hour. And if you're skeptical about how tough it is well I'll tell you. I fish shallow rocky rivers for smallmouth and I started using the stuff last year for my spinnerbaits and I hit rocks and boulders with the baits all the time and still have yet to chip the paint. I used to use vinyl jig paint and clear epoxy which worked well but after awhile the epoxy finish became "nicked up" and sort of dull looking. Yes the epoxy held up but the oven cured powder is easier and hold up just as good if not better.
cheesehead
I powder coated a 1/8 oz ball head jig then proceeded to flatten it with a hammer. Most of the paint stayed on even though I had pounded it flat. If you put eyes on your heads use the vinyl paint after the powder has been cured. it will withstand anything you care to dish out at it. LedHed
I fish the Sea of Cortez and the triggerfish can chew the paint of anything. Powder paint is tough stuff when cured right. When I apply 3 D eyes or flat eyes ? I overcoat with Devcon 2 T.
