rjlures
I started making my own cranks and I was wondering if you guys put an epoxy coat over bare wood first, then prime and paint? Because I just used 2 coats of primer then painted and the lures are still a little grainy. Any input, thanks
Coley
I seal my baits with a 50-50 mix of polyurethane and acetone. The reason I do this is because the humidity is so high in TN it takes several days for the poly to dry without the thinner. Coley
Lincoya
I have started using Delta Ceramcoat's All-Purpose Sealer. It's water-based and dries in about 30 minutes. I just brush it on, wait til it dries and sand it smooth with a 150-grit foam backed sanding pad. After that basecoat and paint. Big Splash
A thin coat of epoxy works for me. No sanding in between coats. I only go down to 120 grit on the wood, 'cause the epoxy finishes it smoothly. You should use a rotating drying rack to keep the coatings thin and even all over the lure. Skeeter
If you are shooting lacquer paint then you can use epoxy as a sealer. Water based paint does not consistantly stick to epoxy. Sometimes it will work and sometimes it won't. Most of the time, it won't. I use polyurathane like Coley. Minwax make a thin quick drying polyurathane that has worked for me real well. It is not as thick as regular polyurathane and does not need to be stirred before using it. You can get it anywhere. It comes in a silver wrapped can. OBAYB
Here's a tip that will save you a ton of money. Next time your wife goes to the store have her pick up a couple bottles of clear fingernail polish. They run .99/ea for the cheap ones. Use this to seal your bare wood lures. BobP
It depends on what kind of wood you're using. IMO, soft balsa needs epoxy to prime and reinforce the wood. Hardwoods don't need reinforcement, just a primer to keep the grain from raising when painted with water based acrylics. Thinned epoxy works well but takes time to cure. I use cellulose propionate pellets or plastic cups disolved in acetone because it dries quickly. But any oil based primer, polyurethane, etc will do.
