trebles

What kind of treble hooks do "you" recommend? I have been replacing factory hooks with excalibers. I've been missing fish a lot this year and currently blaming it on the hooks. Operater error is not under consideration, as usual.

I use to have the same problem. I switched to Eagle Claw and the problem stopped. I know that they have been around forever and that they aren't the most expensive. But they work. However, I also hand sharpen every hook with a file.

Kahle hooks or tripple grip...which i think tripple grips are anyway...you won't believe the difference. I need the pliers 98% of the time, they are hooked that good.

Try vmc! Have to get back to u on which model. These r as sharp as they get. A couple of weeks ago i cuft my self into one of my lures. I couldn;t understand why on earth i couldn;t get my hands apart, until i noticed one treble whas in my left hand and the other in my right one

Then try getting your plier out from the back pocket of your pants, cause i couldn;t get them out with my bare hands. I;m afraid to handle those trebles, that's how sharp they r.

Sry for the of topic but i had to mention it These hoks r great in sizes larger than 6(including it).

theoretically, the sharper the hook, the more likely it is to rip out of the fish's mouth. Eagle Claw and Gamakatsu trebles are perfect for crankbaits. the circular design of a excaliber actually allows it to rip easier

I have always been a fan of Gamakatsu. As mentioned the EWG tend to hold better, but if the fish are just kind of swiping at the bait they will miss it with the EWGs. With the round bend you at least have a chance of hooking them.

Never thought about the shape as a factor, i.e. round more conducive to release. This makes sense. I will take a look at the Eagle Claw shape and actually have some Gamakatsu EWGs.

Is it ok to use oversize hooks on the end of crankbaits like say a Rapala shad rap sz 7? Effect on Action?

Changing the size of the back hook will definitely affect the motion of the bait having more weight to swing back and forth for the wobble. Now changing the front hook has been known to help to get extra depth on your crankbait and it doesn't affect the motion much.

VMC" barbarian out barb" and VMC "David Fritz" round bend treble, best hooks I have ever used. When wanting a different action out of your baits hooks aren't the only thing you can change. You can use split rings as well, get regular and heavy duty in the same sizes the weight differences are small so this is very good for fine tuning.

Thanks for sharing the info. Who is a good source for the VMC hook styles you mentioned? Is the Fritz model the one with the stinger?
