new to rod work

Recommended Posts

Hi folks.

I am new to the rod making and repair area. Actually, I am just starting in it. I am a gunsmith/gunbuilder for 20 plus years but in recent past, people are less willing to part with the $$ for their guns. Sumthin' for nuthin'. On the other hand, guys who want custom rods are not afraid to pay for a tuned 'stick.

Also, its an open market here. No one here does it. In fact, I have 2 Rods wioth bum guildes that need fixing and I have to send them out to get it done.

I know the obvious of research and trial-n-error to get started. What else should I know? Where is the best place to start as far as tooling, etc.?

I already do some lure building, I want to add this to my bag o'tricks.

Tom Kirkman's book Rod Building Guide (I think that's the name) is about the best book you're going to find.

Dale Clemens book Advanced Custom Rod Building is good although much more dated than Kirkman's.

rodbuilding.org is easily the best web site available.

Wealth of information in those spots and I would highly recommend doing some research before making any tool decisions. A casual builder can get by with very little. A serious builder can wrap a lot of money up in equipment.

I appreciate the response. My goal is just that, start small, see where it takes me. I started doing guns like that. Nothing more than a Brigeport mill and a dozen buddies that needed scopes mounted on their guns. Now, its taken on a life of its own.

I will certainly check out the site and I have already strted looking for the books.

Thanks again
