KelpKritter
Hope someone can help me figure out the mold making process for a new master. Read quite a bit a few weeks back in the tutorials but can seem to find them after the website issues. I will be pouring swimbaits in sizes from 3 to 6.5 inches with most baits coming in at five inches. I would like to have at least four cavities and up to as many as six in what will be a one sided mold as the baits have a flat top edge. I just bought some sculpey and want to find out what materials I can work with to make the molds after the sculpey is made into the master and how to most effeciently get multiple cavities off of the original master. Thanks for any and all responses, Dave B.
OHBAITMKER
Dave, I use a container such as a pie or cake pan sized to the bait size and the amount of cavities, glue the masters down to the bottom with silicone, mix fiberglass resin and pour in. Let set for 24-48 hrs and pop out of the pan. Then remove masters and touch up with dremel tool. Good luck
KelpKritter
My biggest concern is how the sculpey master will come out of materials like POP or resin. I have made molds using both materials before, but with a soft plastic as the master. What are the other options are out there or is the POP or resin a good material to use with the clay? DaveB. bassnfool
I like to use silicone made by Smooth On. Releasing the masters is not a problem, and the silicone duplicates fine details that the others can't. A little on the expensive side, but the molds last and last. nova
Your sculpy clay master is a one time thing. You will have to dig it out being careful not to gouge the sides of the mold. Then you clean up the mold; seal it to a shiny surface and let cure. I use the oven set at 125 to cure the epoxy. This is your "master mold" from there you use scrap plastic to pour out as many baits as you need to make the size mold you want to work with. Make sure all the baits look the same(detail). Then you make your working mold with those baits. Do not destroy your master mold; put it in a safe place after you identify it with a marker in case you break or wear out the working mold. This way you can re-use the clay. POP is cheaper than sculpy clay. www.novalures.com
