Shaky head type jigs out of Do-It F-ball mold

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the info. Brilliant! I just poured a bunch using your method. Works great. I used some stainless wire for the screw lock. Put a small nail in my cordless drill. Shoved the wire in between the chuck and the nail and activated the drill. Turned it three or four turns and presto. Makes a great screw lock. You can make various diameters by using diffent sized nails. Nothing holds plastic better than a screw lock. You can turn out 50 scew locks in no time. The time consuming part is getting everything lined up in the mold.

Like your idea on using the drill to form the wire, but do form the wire before or after you pour your jigs?

I form them before I pour the head. Use a nail that is small enough diamater so the screw lock fits in the weedguard slot. You can then use the same size nail to keep the lead from entering the screw lock. I ended up using a small finishing nail. Making the screw locks with the drill is easy.

Hey guys, its been a while since I posted on this site. The new site is great! Anyway Chris you hit the nail on the head about making shakey heads with the hitchhiker and skirt collar. Both work great! My question is, has anyone actually fished the poision tail jig as a shakey head. I tried them in the sink and it just lays on its side.

Jigfisherman, if U don't mind me asking what do-it mold did U start with to get the Spot remover knockoff. That jighead is dynamite for fishing these deep southern lakes for apotted bass. Can fish one head all day in deep brush as long as you change baits when the hook hole gets hogged out and sloppy. Also I see you menyion JB weld to form the mold. Does JB hold up to the temps ok?

I was the same way when I bought this mold. I was tired of loosing 3 or 4 heads a trip and decided to find a way to make my own. If you decide to jump into it, hold on because you won't want to stop. Making your own baits is fun but catching fish on your own baits is something to experience. Good Luck.

Your post made my finally break down and purchase the football mold and a pot. Received my delivery yesterday and went straight to the garage. Took me about 5 minutes and I was making Shaky Heads. Dipped em in some green pumpkin powder paint and the look AWESOME.

If anyone out there fishes alot of shaky heads, get the mold and give it a try.

If that post is directed toward me, I put a couple pics in the jig gallery under shaky head jigs. You can see them there.

First, let me thank you for your post on "Making Shaky Heads with a Do-It Football Mold". Bought the mold, been pouring the shaky heads and catching some fish.

My question is this - some of my buddies would like to have some smaller size shaky heads. The smallest size I can pour with the football head mold is 1/4oz. I see where Do-It also has a weedless round head mold that has cavities in smaller sizes (1/8, 3/16 & 1/4). Do you know if the round head mold will also accept the 'standard' Hitchhiker spring/worm lock in the place of the fiber weedgaurd?

I have been ordering my 'hitchhikers' from Stamina. The only sizes that I see in their catalog and on their website is 'medium' and 'large' - I dont see a 'small' listed for sale. I have been using the 'medium' ones in my football mold.

The roundhead mold that I want to buy calls for a "FG-30" weedgaurd and the football mold that I have calls for a "FG-12". The FG-30, which fits the roundhead mold that I want to buy, has dimensions of a 1/8 base and length of 1-3/4.

The FG-12, which fits the football mold I have, has dimensions of 5/68 base and length of 1-3/8. If I have my math right, the FG-12 weedgaurd (football) is smaller than the FG-30 (roundhead)???? Is this right??? Just seems backwards that as I am trying to decrease the size of the cavities for the lead, and at the same time, the size of the weedgaurd is getting larger?????

Somebody tell me I'm wrong :-)

Anybody know????

Anybody got some other tricks up their sleeve? :-)

If you take the collar off of the football head jig it will weight between 1/8 and 3/16oz. and it will stand up alot better also, I always take part of it off on my football heads that I make into shakey heads.

And yes it very strange that the small roud heads take a bigger weed gaurd, but the football head is more for open water rock fishing than thick cover, or atleast thats what I was told.

I've been shopping around for some stainless wire and can only find wire that is not stainless and might not even be galvanized. That said, the size of wire gets thicker and heavier as the guage size goes down. I just found some stainless wire on Stamina's site and it seems the wire gets gets lighter as the guage size goes down. Could use some direction getting the stainless wire. Thanks, Pop

Pop,

Are you looking for wire to make your baitholders with? The little spring that will extend from the chin of your shaky heads? If this is what you are referring to, you might try buying some of the 'hitchhikers' from Stamina. They are already preformed. Order the 'medium' ones as the larger ones wont fit in the Do-It football head mold.

Pop, if you can't find what you're looking for at all the tackle places, go to www.mcmastercarr.com. They have all the wire you could possibly want with all the different gages, grades and fininshes. They even explain to you what wire is suited for what conditions. They are a wealth of knowledge for everything, for those who need to know.

Dang you guys.

I dremel a slot at a 45d angle to the hook shank and add a piece of stainless steel leader material as a wire guard.

Tonight I'll be taking one of my wire guard jigs and trying the bend to see if it can be convereted into a shakey head jig.

If not, I may get a thinner diameter wire that'll be easier to bend.

Great stuff here!
