basssj
I am trying to plan a summer bass fishing vacation. Anyone ever been to Georgian Bay, Lake Huron. I have heard that the fishing for both largemouth and smallmouth up there is really good. Just wondering if that is true? Thanks for the input. basssj
Guppy Slayer
Where about's on Georgian... I fish Salmon near Collingwood and Thornbury. I have never targeted Bass on Georgian but had Friends that have done well around Parry Sound and Midland.
basssj
Guppy I was looking at the area around Midland, Severn Sound particularly. That big water is kind of intimidating to a guy with a 18ft. bass boat though. I read an article in Bassmaster, a couple years ago and it got my curiosity up so I was just wondering. Guppy Slayer
18ft is fine... My boat is 17.5 and I down rig sometimes more than a mile off shore. Just have to respect the weather... If you think you see a storm coming in, get off right away even if it's not raining yet. Being your targeting bass I suspect you won't be that far off shore anyway. Happy Fishing and good luck! Laurie
Hi There! If I were to open my window right now, I would be able to hear the waves on Georgian Bay! I grew up here, and Georgian Bay is my first love! It is part of almost all of my best child hood memories! It is a truly beautiful area, and the fishing is phenomenal...there is something here for everyone! You were right about Georgian Bay being "big water"....she is tempermental and deserves your respect. (Just like any other body of water, really!) Having said this, there are plenty of areas that you can go to that are sheltered and full of awesome fishing opportunities. The article that you read in Bassmaster was likely an interview with my friend and the president of my local bass club. (The two of us hold the club record for the biggest bag of 5 fish ...and they were caught on Georgian Bay!!! We were actually fishing the area that you mentioned!) I'd be happy to help you with any info that you need, feel free send me a pm. I can set you up with some maps, pictures, tourist info, etc. if you like. (I'm sure there's even a spot in my boat for you, if you come this way!) Laurie Charlebois Vice President-Tournament Director Georgian Bay Bassmasters P.S. ...a "shout out" to Guppy Slayer too! My brother is the Chief Engineer at the Coast Guard Search and Rescue Base in Meaford....not too far from your Salmon hunting grounds!!! Laurie
P.S. You can check out the area and get local fishing reports here: http://www.fishgeorgianbay.com/index.html
basssj
to all who responded, I thank you for the info. I am really excited now. Laurie, what did your 5 fish limit weigh? Largemouth or smallmouth?
Laurie
We weighed in 22.22 lbs, all were smallies. The best part was that the we caught quality fish all day long. We had a limit within about an hour, and it was all just fun and games from there! (Note: Our previous club record came from the Parry Sound area, mentioned earlier in this thread!) Other great fisheries in the area are Lake Simcoe and Lake Couchiching. Both lakes are joined together by a "narrows", and are located about an 1 hour north of Toronto.) The Canadian record of 29.90 lbs (5 fish limit) was caught there last fall. http://www.aurorabass.com/club/Events/C4926EE5-C20F-4F66-90F7-52D0A110E087.html
