RiverMan
Hey guys, I have been away from doing anything with soft plastics for some time and would like a bit of advice from the pros here. I am wanting to experiment with some large grubs (like 6-8 inches long). What I'm wondering is if I build a two part mold out of plaster will I be able to get the hot plastic all the way to the tip of the grub tail? I know I can do it with a one piece mold but I want the grub to be round. I don't want to bother with RTV if I can help it because I am totally in the "experimental stage" at this point. Thank you. nova
There are 2 ways to do it. One way is to make an air channel from the lowest part of the tail out the bottom of the mold. Another one should be made from the top of the curl of the tail out the side of the mold. This should allow the air pressure inside the mold to be equalized as you pour so that the plastic will flood the cavity. The other way is to pour the tail section; close the mold and then finish the pour. The first method can result in and incomplete pour and the second will require trimming of the tail after the plastic sets. Hope this helps. www.novalures.com
RiverMan
Thanks for the words of wisdom...I will design the mold as you have suggested. One question....if I try pouring the tail section first, is it necessary the tail plastic still be in a liquid form when I put the rest of it? nova
Not really; but it should be hot; and the plastic you pour for the body has to be hot so that the 2 will hookup. www.novalures.com
RiverMan
I gotcha....the tail I have made in the master has a bunch of curls to it so I am thinking that the only way I will get it to fill is to pour it first and then the top section. Thank you for taking the time to help out! jed v.
dtrs5kprs
Has anyone tried making a 2 part mold that pours thru "side sprues" on the big baits. Seems like you could arrange 1 or 2 sprues on the side of the mold, vs pouring from the head of the bait, and be able to fill the mold more completely. RiverMan
It's funny you wrote that. I finished the two part mold last night but haven't put the sprues in yet. I was looking at the mold and it almost looks like it would make more sense to put the main pour sprue in the middle of the first bend of the grub rather than at the top of the biggest part of the grub........did that make sense? lol. nova
The problem with that is when you pour it with the sprue there it will plug up and you will get an incomplete pour. www.novalures.com
tad
I am finding that if I make large sprues my baits fill up better and don't have a hollow head, I'm using 2 part POP mold of 5" curly tails.
Travis
Most of these style grubs are easy to pour out of pop or durhams molds. The tails are thick enough that they pour easily. I never had any problems with them not filling. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v302/TravisH/worms.jpg
