Shmang
Any of you lure experts know of a jig hook that is a shade less "firm" than one made of black nickle? I am looking for a hook that bends back on a snag a little more than a black nickle one does but is a little more stout than a plain wire hook does. Might be a long shot but I had to ask. Thanks and take care Shmang
piddler
the finish on a hook has nothing to do with it's flex properties. temper and wire diameter determine how much the hook can spring open and close before bending or breaking. try the smallest wire diameter available regardless of finish. i used to do this when crappie fishing. i would use light wire hooks and heavy line. when i got hung up, i would use a slow, steady pull until the hook sprang open and came loose. Gr8flyz
In the case of hooks with a black nickel finish, hook makers only seem to be using this type of finish on premium grade hooks, which are generally not easy to bend out of shape. Matt, you might consider some of the Eagle Claw Lazer type hooks, which are not as stiff as Gammmies or Mustad Ultra Points, but are still a slightly better hook than the older styles like their standard 570 Aberdeen jig hooks. If you really need a hook that will bend a lot, then you're stuck with using the standard type light wire hooks from Mustad or Eagle Claw, and I'm sure you know you're sacrificing strength & factory sharpness with these hooks when compared to the premium quality hooks available. Of course they're also a less expensive hook. Unfortunately there really isn't much selection available in an "in between" type hook from what I've seen. Rob Olling
Just red the post, for a long time crappie fishermen have been untempering their jig hooks with(ug! ug!) FIRE!!! They normally take a matches or a lighter and over heat the bend in the hook so it will open up real easy, I have only heard of this being done on the gold hooks though, whick normally bend real easy reguardless. I would rather lose a few lures than have the fish of the year open up the hook on me with little force.
Fat Ratz
Shmang, you can use a regular wire jig hook instead of a heavy duty hook. You can look at Barlow's jig hooks, they offer a wire and a heavy duty jig hook.
WidowMaker
I use Eagle Claw #630 Lazer Sharp Hooks in my tube jigs. Believe it or not when i get hung up i can straighten them out while using regular Stren 14 lb. Test Monofilament. But this comes from years of practice perfecting my knot tying capabilities.
