Shawn M
Hello all, Has anyone used lure flippers on their spinners? I've used some tubing on the hooks, but really don't like it. I ran across the lure flippers in the Netcraft catalog and was thinking they might be another option. There is are a couple types of sunfish here that are really popular for eating (which I don't know since I released all I caught...much to the shock of the other folks fishing). They only are in a few rivers and streams that are real clear and cold. I fished for them twice this past summer (2 hour drive). They hang out in the rocks and bite mostly spinners retrieved slowly above the rocks. The first time I fished for them I lost a bunch of spinners, but caught quite a few. It got me thinking so I put together a spinner that resembles a SB and used a double hook instead of a treble. The second time I went after these fish, this spinner worked real well without losing to many to the rocks. I'm sure they would work elsewhere and only take a couple minutes to put together. The Dutchman
Shawn, What bending tool are you using for those spinners? Thanks, Joe
Mr B
Shawn, very cool. I like the mini spinnerbait w/ the double hook.
Shawn M
Thanks for the compliments. I use the $11 wire former from Netcraft and a pair of round nose pliers. I actually only use the wire former for the eye for the hook and the pliers for everything else. I only make a few spinners at a time as I need, so I couldn't justify buying one of the expensive wire formers. I guess if you were mass producing them an expensive one would be the way to go. The pliers I use have one jaw round and the other "cupped" to fit over the round one. I think it works much better than the pliers with both jaws round. What about using the lure flippers on spinners? Shawn
The Dutchman
Shawn, years ago most of the spinners had a red flapper on it. Most spinners did not have any type of feather of hair and the flapper was an attractor for fish. I cannot see where a flapper will turn fish off unless they are in a very negative mood. They have different colors but the red is the one most used. They also come in different sizes. Something I have tried is to take a size three willow blade and put a size 00 willow on the same split ring. Put on the outside of the #3. This adds flash and noise. Hoope this helps, Joe
Shawn M
Thanks for the insight Joe. This really all comes from the fact I suck at tying anything on a hook. I have tried tying the flashabou on a small treble, and have ended up a bloody mess. I had a guy at work show me the basics of tying (he made it look so easy), but after 50 treble hooks I still couldn't get it down. I was hoping to to add a little red on the treble hook that wasn't my blood. I'll go ahead and order some of the small red flippers and see how it goes. Thanks!
