Coley
Does anyone use Minwax Polycrylic Protective Finish to seal the wood on their crankbaits? It is an ultra-frast drying product that is water based. You can add a tint to it with your acrylic water base paints. It kinda looks like milk thinned with water. Extremely low odor. By adding white to it, you can prime and seal at the same time. Coley
dtrs5kprs
Funny you should ask...I picked up a can of that stuff the other day with the same idea. Wasn't quite sure about it, since it labelled for interior use only. But then so is the Kilz I use now. Have about 10 baits ready to seal, so will probably try it this weekend. Nathan
I use that stuff all the time.I don't add any color to it.I just shoot a coat of white paint on when it dries. That stuff is a great to mix glitters in aswell. When it dries it is clear.Besure to use a good epoxy top coat when your finished With your lure..Nathan
dtrs5kprs
Have not had problems with the wood grain. I've used 2 coats of Kilz, and Flex Coat the bait when it is dry. Base coats and colors are sprayed over the initial layer of FC.
Big Splash
Lurehead, if I can remember all the way back to shop class in highschool.... Any sealer that is water based should be sanded after it dries. The water swells the grain. Very tightly grained woods show less, while softer woods like pine or balsa are worst. I just aviod water based primer coats.
Coley
As far as I can tell, this stuff works great, so far. Coley
dtrs5kprs
Coley...So far, so good on the Minwax Q on my end. Have 4 flat sides sealed with teh Polycrylic and 4 sealed with Minwax polyurethane (2 coats each). I think the ones sealed with the water based finish actually look better so far. Should know more tomorrow. Might post some pics if there is anything significant to pass along. May be a little finish sanding to do before spraying, but certainly not more than the Kilz required. OBAYB
Here's a little tip most people don't realize. A great wood sealer is clear fingernail polish. No sanding needed. Next time your wife goes to the store have her pick some up. They run about .99 per bottle. Whatever you do....do NOT go to the checkout counter with them. Have your wife do it. Sonny.Barile
It tried Polyacrylic and found it to be to spongy. It doesnt get real hard which means your paints will crack ifthe surface flexes from impact...............
