RiverMan
I just ordered a replacement tip for my airbrush and four 2-ounce paint bottles...you could fit everything I ordered into a sandwich bag. BearAir charged me 16 dollars for postage!! I could send the same thing anywhere in the world in a flat rate evelope through the USPS for 10 dollars! I was robbed! reeves
Hey Riverman, we all get 'robbed' everytime we order something from a catalog or on-line. Just when you think you got a hell of a deal on your purchase, you find that your pocket was picked on the shipping end. Ebay sellers are famous for this. As for me, I only charge my customers what it cost me to ship, good reason why I am not a fortune 500 guy. A question for you along the same line. I have been hesitating from ordering from Bear Air right now because of the season. I can't believe that a bottle of Createx won't end up freezing in a box in the back of a UPS truck this time of year. Do you recognize this as a problem, or is the paint still ok to use if it has been frozen? Comments please!
Lure--Prof
Most of them get ya one way or another...that is one thing I like about ordering stuff from Stamina; over $100 they ship free. I really don't mind paying for actual shipping costs. I don't like handling charges though; it's difficult to sell anything without first handling it! fish devil
Have you tried the "aqua flow" airbrush paint they offer? thx. RM No, but I will drive by pearl later tonight on my way home from the boat show. If peral is open I will buy some and put it through my badger pro 150. I need some paint anyway. Delw
Heres the lowdown on shipping fees. Someone has to package the box's and that isnt free as time is money. Supplies are needed as in box's tape and other items that are not free either. While small shops can and dont mind chargeing exact rates sometimes it isnt justifiable to run to the post office so someone gets something shipped cheaper. a business is in business to make money not to give it away. all these little things add up. funny thing did you know that ups delievers out flat rate envelopes from the post office. I thought that was kinda wierd for example: we only ship USPS (Post office) because we live less than a mile from the post office and April drops them off on the way to pick the kids up from school. Other wise if we lived 10 miles from one I woudlnt have her waste the time especially in the city, or she would charge extra to do it due to gas. And your right they will come and pick up but they dont at our shop and when they have they are un reliable, sometimes 2-3 days before they even show up cause they didnt get the call they say. UPS comes right to our shop every day, he backs in and loads the stuff, we just leave it at the door. its very convient and only 2 times in a few years he has been late( but still showed up) one was due to a car accident and the other was due to a family emergency. still they had another truck show up even thought it was 2-3 hours later(almost 7pm). then you have other issues, for example: lets say for 10 years you been buying your packageing supplies from one place 2-3 times a week. then at the begining of the week they go out of business with no warning. so now you have to find them someplace else . april had to pick up some box's cause the orders had to go out. They came from a new place the box's were 1.50each MORE than she normally pays. it took her 3 days to find boxs ( yes even in the city). from another source. we thought for sure we would have to raise our shipping to cover the cost. On a side note this one place have some really nice barrier bags the same type as we sell now 7 wide 4" tall , they were 2.00 each LMAO I kid you not. I am pretty sure they dont sell many. they lady about died when april says we buy them at 5000 per shot. needless to say we were lucky to find another place. what I am trying to say some business order box's and supplies from a place that is alot higher than were we might find them. just because we can get a box for 60 cents doesnt mean that everyone can.( that .60 cent box at one place here in town was 2.12) so now we have to order 5-10 times the amount of boxs to get a good price( back to what we had). Since I own a business I dont have a problem paying a shipping fee or a handling fee as I know that someone has to package the box. I dont expect anything for free. just remember just because some one could go and ship that box for lets say 10 bucks vs the 16 the company charged doesnt mean its bad. Yes some place's on ebay and online do hike the shipping beyond belief. Ive seen shipping for cameras in some places for over 200 bucks, most runs about $50 including insurance. "EYE" DOCTOR
Ups is the absolute best! You might pay more for better service but you wont see a "mail man" anywhere at 7:00 pm even if it is their fault. In my opinion customer service is number 1. The quality and consistency you provide online means nothing if your on road sales man drops the ball! That delivery guy represents your company and you have to decide if you are the best and the people who are meeting your customers are the best! If you said no you are not using UPS and your customers know this.
dayooper
I use the USPS all the time. With the flat rate shipping from USPS, the most we ever charge is $8.10 for shipping. USPS has free Priority Mail boxes and tape you can order from their site. You can easily print postage online and you get free delivery confirmation. The best part though is their free carrier pickup. I place all my prepaid packages in a rubber maid tote on the front porch and the carrier picks them up for free. It take about 5 seconds to schedule a pickup and an email will also get sent to the purchaser saying their package has been shipped. I haven't had any problems with the USPS and very rarely have to go to the actual post office (except for international packages). Coley
Coast Air wanted $7.00 to ship me an "O-ring) smaller than a dime. It would easily mail for 39 cents. And I bought the airbrush from them. I'll use tape everytime I paint.
nova
When I mailed out the 2 prize packs from my contest it cost me $25 with the taxes. Never mind the cost of the 2 large bubble envelopes. it's not going to get any better guys as he price of gas keeps going up. www.novalures.com
Lure--Prof
Most of them get ya one way or another...that is one thing I like about ordering stuff from Stamina; over $100 they ship free. I really don't mind paying for actual shipping costs. I don't like handling charges though; it's difficult to sell anything without first handling it!Dean The above remark concerning handling fees was said only partially in jest. There are many businesses whose handing fees are quite justified. However, if all, or, the primary thrust of your business is mail-order, and the bulk of your shipping falls generally within a fairly narrow size range, I don't see why the "handling" part isn't simply a cost of doing business built into your pricing structure. Too often, the reason for a handling charge is simply a surcharge used to keep individual item prices as low as possible for comparison to the competition. An example of this would be the price of a fishing reel sold by an outdoor supply conglomorate compared to the same fishing reel's price offered by a local tackle shop. The mail order place has overhead such as storage, picking the item and packaging, etc, but the tackle shop around the corner also has overhead for presenting the item where it can be seen and inspected: If the tackle shop charged a "presentation" fee as a surcharge at the counter, you'd think they were crazy, and that you were being hoodwinked by the low price marked on the item. If you were also told by the tackle shop that one reason the presentation fee was so high was because the price of toilet paper, towels, and can liners in their public restroom had jumped in price because they had to suddenly change suppliers, you' be ready to call the cops, or your wife to awaken you from this nightmare. Yet, with the handling fee charged by many catalog suppliers, an item's low price point made up for in the handling fee is often a tactic used by mail-order businesses for a competitive advantage over local retail shops. In the early days of one popular mail-order tackle company, I remember handling prices for small items somtimes as high as $10, back when that sum would actually buy you something. Sometimes you just have to really respect L.L. Bean's shipping philosophy! (in a nutshell, they don't charge for shipping and handling because that's how they sell stuff) Dean
