I say fiberglass resin, because that's what I use B) But this actually kind of a hard question. Here is what I would like to add:

Aluminum: Best overall consistency. All your molds will be exactly alike. Very expensive.

Plaster: Most cost efficient. Great for beginners. You have to apply top coat.

Plasticene: I don't see much difference then the plaster here?

RTV: Easy to use. Not much to it. Great detail. Expensive.

Resin: Product is always shiny. No need to take the time to apply top coat. Like plaster and rtv you can get great detail like scale patterns. Unlike the last two mentioned, you can make multiple changes to the mold after it is set. A little more complicated to mix. More expensive than plaster.

Those are just my thoughts. I have seen excellent results from all the above! I also think everyone just has to find what they are comfortable with.

I recommend you eventually try em all. theres a use for all of em in my shop. I use putty, resin (poly & urethane) plaster, RTV, & alot of other weird stuff.

RTV can pickup details like a fingerprint & the texture of a feather.

Overall though, your success is commensurate with your skill & how well you work with it.

That being said, problems & mess-ups can get pretty expensive using RTV, where for example, using plaster or resin, its no real big loss.

Good luck, no matter what you choose.
