Shawn M
Hey guys...I've been banding my skirts with a pair of needle nose pliers, but after 10 or 20 it gets pretty tedious. I've been looking at the skirt making tools out there, but am not seeing how they really work (I was thinking about making one). I don't make too many at a time, so I figured it might be better to make one instead of buying. Does anyone have some opinions on using a commercial one compared to pliers or a home made one? The pictures I've looked at are too small to really see how they work. If anyone has made one and would like to give me some tips on construction I would really appreciate it. Thanks! Joe
Check either Barlows or Netcraft. I can't remember which is where I bought mine. It is a tube that attaches to your work bench. The collars are loaded onto the tube and rolled off onto the skirt pads as they are pulled through the tube. Price is around $12.00 Good Luck, Joe
WidowMaker
I use the Skirt Master with the three prong collar expander. It works well when you are sometimes using three and four layers of material. Best thing to do with it is make a wire hook from a large paper clip and duct tape it to the table. You can then open the collar and place it down over the hook. Then place the layers in the hook and use it to pull the ends of the layers up through the collar. cadman
Shawn I use the same thing as WidowMaker, They are very handy. By the way guys I tape all my loose strands on the skirt, and make a point out of the tape, then I stick the tape with the skirt in the tool. It makes it much easiser for me anyway. WidowMaker..... Where do you buy your SkirtMaster from. I've looked around, and have not seen it in any of the catalogs. I do have the manufacturer info though. I want to buy another one just in case I break mine.....Thanks Guys.
WidowMaker
I ordered it straight from the guy who distributes them. Im guessing he is the one who either has the factory build them or he builds them himself. If im not mistaken Barlows or Janns may have sold them at one time. Tr186
You can make yourself one of the tube type skirt makers very easily. Take a ball point pen and take the ink out. Cut the tube in half using the tapered end as the end that you will be sliding your collar on. Take a jumbo paper clip and straighten it. Slide the paper clip through the pen tube and bend a small hook on the end that sticks out the tapered end. Be sure the hook can be pulled into the tube. I bent the other end of the wire so it would not fall all the way through the tube (optional). Slide your collar up onto the tapered end of the pen tube. Hook your skirt pads on the hook, pull the pads into the tube, slide the collar onto the pads and your done. It is cheap and you can make several. Keep some at home and some in the boat. cadman
Ted,Are you looking for this ? http://www.drfun.com/SkirtMaster/ Guys, Did anybody try the tool from Naked Baits ? Any comments ? http://www.nakedbaitco.com/ Regards, PSV The SkirtMaster tool the one you show the link for is the new model that replaces the old three pronged tool that myself, Widowmaker and others have. I don't have the new one but I have three of the old ones. They have worked really well for me throughout the years.
gat0r
I have used the naked bait one and love it. I have it mounted on my workbench. It's fast and simple and locks into place. I can get the skirts nice and even before I tighten the band around the layers.
Munkin
I just started using the Naked bait one and really like it. You can use a lot of different colors in your skirts at once. Finally I can make a sunfish colored skirt with 6 different colors with ease. Instead of using screws I just duct tape mine to my kitchen counter. psv
It seems like I'm going to buy one. Thank you, Guys. Regards, PSV
haybay larry
I too have a "naked bait" tool. I would never go back to making skirts with the pliers method. With the pliers method the rubber bands would frequently shoot off across the room or break before I inserted the skirt. The naked bait model has a lock position that makes assembly easy! clamboni
Has anyone tried the Naked Bait Company one with the harder rubber rattle skirt collars? The mickey mouse looking ones. They don't stretch as much and I've been thinking about buying that expander but was worried the collars I use would break if expanded that far. mikel7@mac.com
I Had A Few Break, They Were The Ones With Long Rattle Holders. Now I Expand Them A Few Times Before Locking In Place That Seems To Work. No Problem With The Others.
Jigfish
Hey Guys, if you are worried about the expasion on softer rubber collars there is very little room for adjustment. i have broken a couple but not all will break, and besides for as little as th collar cost who cares. Thanks Jef
