microtek60
What are you using for a top coat epoxy for spinnerbait heads and how do you apply it? Can you just brush it on?
rsinyard
Myself and a lot of guys here use the 2 Ton epoxy from walmart. It is very thick when mixed so I use detunated(spelling??) alcohol to thin it down. You can get the alcohol at Lowes in the paint department. I use epoxy on mine because I use 3d eyes and you have to cover them with something so they will stay on.
siebler_custom_baits
I too use Devcon 2 ton thined out a little. Its a good tough finish. You just brush it on and it self levels, Problem is without a lure dryer (it rotates your baits) youll end up with the excess bunching up on the low side of the bait or hook shank. Not always a problem if theres not much excess or its in a ok spot like past the collar on the hook shank where it can be trimmed off. cadman
I use Devcon 2T (30 minute) also. I stick my jigs in styrofoam standing straight up. Head on top hook barb in styrofoam. On spinnerbaits I do the same or you can clamp them with alligator clips. I do not rotate my jigs. I also do not thin my epoxy. I just mix, brush it on, and that's it. I rarely if never have any runs down the hook shaft. That's how I do it.
Mr B
I prefer EnviroTex. It is already thin and in my opinion it stays Clear longer. More noticable on the White heads. It is a 2 part mixture like Devcon. It can be found at many Craft Stores. Mr B
siebler_custom_baits
Forgot in my post to add that you need to make sure its 2 ton epoxy and not the 5 minute if you go with devcon. Reason being that the 5 min. quickly yellows and flakes. As for thinking the epoxy, I have found that a thinned epoxy takes longer to cure and seems to be more durable (same reason that the 2ton is more durable than the 5min). Also on certain lure molds that have detail on the you will see the detail much better with a thinned topcoat. Customers like this i have figured out. Not to mention if you thin it youll use less epoxy per X amount of lures.
wilfish4774
Wow,wow, wow, I didn't know that one could thin the Devcon 2 ton. I can think of times when thinning it alittle would work out better. I am open to trying anything other than the Devcon because it does get pricey after a while and if I could find something in the pump bottles that had a good shelf life I might be agreeable to giving it a try. As to the miss spelling of the word describing the type of achol. Is what you are trying to spell denatured achol?
lilcraw
Appox. what is the drying time for the Devcon 2 ton after thinning ???????
wilfish4774
I have never used a thinner with the Devcon 2 ton epoxy. I thought that I read that someone used denatured achol but I don't know anything about it. When I am using the devcon 2 ton (without thinner) it I can coat 10 or 12 jigs before it starts to stiffen up so that is about right for me anyway.
