Howard Capone
In a world were bigger is better:worship:, and more is better:lolhuh:How thick should you make the skirt on a spinner bait? How many strands?
microtek60
on most spinnerbaits that you buy from the store they have 40 strands. I feel that is a little bare so I put 60 on all the ones that I make. I think that if you go more than that it gets a little to full. dampeoples
Depends on what you're looking for, a big profile bait, or a smaller profile bait.
Howard Capone
Thank you microtek60 but what is to full? dampeoples, what do you mean by big or small profile?
siebler_custom_baits
Its all preference. Experiement and see what you like, and more importantly what fish (and customers) like.
Shawn M
I like 60 strands for 1/2 oz, 50 for 3/8 oz, 40 for 1/4 oz, and 35 for 1/8 oz. It is personal preference, but those work for me (and the fish seemed to agree last year). Shawn
dampeoples
I mean the number of strands give the bait a certain profile, a smaller number gives the impression of a smaller, more compact bait, etc, just like Shawn said - he adds more strands based on how heavy the bait is. Howard Capone
Thank you and this is what I came up with. http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t15/howardcapone/FishingLures002-1.jpg Howard Capone
donkjc2
I have been trying some different things with some of my spinnerbaits. I like to take a 1/4 oz spinnerbait and put 60 strands on it with a number 5 willow. This has been great for slow rolling the bait just under the surface. The extra skirt material seems to keep it up better. Just something I have tried. Hope this idea doesen't get mass produced.LOL
rsinyard
I also vary my skirts. A clear or holographic skirt I use 60 strands. Because 40 or even 50 shows more of the hook than I like. For a darker skirt I use 50 strands. Like Shawn said it is personal preference.
