Skeeter
Ethically I feel it is wrong to copy another persons bait for personal gain. Legally, what is anyone really gonna do about it? You really can't prove it is your personal idea. (Even though it may be). I hear folks talk about getting patents, copyrights, etc. but not many are really gonna put up the money or the time that it takes to really go after someone. If you want to protect your stuff, don't put it on the internet of all places. I haven't posted any pics of my baits since the site first opened. There is a reason for that. rsinyard
I would like to find out how many folks here at TU actually make a profit on your lures? Or am I the only one that spends any profit on more lure making equipment?
Jason
To me I could care less. I make lures for me and for trades with fellow carvers. If I'm posting it online, it's fair game. I feel all lures, to a point, are reflections of another lure concept. We post our lures on here because we are proud of what we have made, and would like to share our design and answer any "How did you..." questions. That's what keeps us going on here. Skeeter are you really that afraid of someone stealing your design? That's what makes us individual lure builders. I feel I may come "close" to your design, but I can never match your style because it is just that. Yours. Well, that's my two cents. I'll be needing it back to buy lure hardware
Delw
The thing I see here is everyone says you need to ask permission. hmmmmm did you all ask permission to copy a lure like a senko, beaver etc etc etc? I didnt think so. Just because alot of guys in the site posts pics if they dont want it copied then dont post the pics or show off the bait. Matter of fact dont put it online to sell either cause it will be copied by someone. if you guys only knew who sends me baits and how many baits from this site and other sites to get made you would die. One of my customers in ca that I made some really cool baits for and only he has them. anyway a tourny fishermen( big named one out west) had a worm sent to me recently and asked if I would make it. Since I signed a non disclosure form and invented( so to speak) this bait I knew it and told him I couldn't. What I am getting at if I didnt know whos worm it was I could have made it and never thought anything about it. this is one reason I never look at the pics on this site as I dont want people getting butthurt when I make a mold for someone and it turns out to be a copy of one on this site. Personally if you dont ask yamamoto, zoom berley, gambler etc etc for permission you have no reason to demand that someone asks permission to copy your bait. on the other side of that coin look at it this way. ( using me as an example again) a guy asks if I will build him a bait , I tell him to send it to me and I will look at it. Ive never seen the bait before and decide to make it for him. in our conversation I find out he has never poured but really likes this bait and uses it alot, and also wants to learn how to pour. so I tell him about this website. he gets his mold and stuff , then starts making baits, Calls me up to reorder some glitters and colors. Asks me again what the name of that website was......... calls me up the next day and say's " Oh #### I went to that website you gave me and there is a worm just like the one you made for me, " so what do you do? the guy never been on TU never even heard of it, never heard of me until he saw an ad in a magizine and called me up. now this pour guy is worried about coming on here and getting drilled for something he had no idea about untill he logged into this site. He is probally reading this and going Del you (*&^(%(^ you better keep your mouth shut. Honestly it happened just in the last few months, he is a really cool guy and isnt very computer literate ( I think he said he only use's it to look at porn j/k'ing). but you see whats happening right? The bottom Line is if you want to keep your bait to yourself, you dont post it, dont sell it dont do anything with it, just like you/us copying baits from big manufacturers is the same thing as someone copying yours. Just because you copied a big named manufacturer doesnt make it any different than copying someones on this site.
donkjc2
Thanks DEL, the point I was making is that if you give someone on THIS SITE an idea for a lure, don't turn around an hour later and post that same idea on here as your own. Then go the extra mile and have a contest to name your bait for you. Then go to the trading post and offer your new bait up for sale or trade. The bait in question is a copy of any bait you want it to be, the process is the new idea. Thats why I shared the idea in the first place. I enjoy coming to this site and seeing what other people are doing with there lures. I never would try to start contest's and what not using someone else's idea. This is, as far as I know, an isolated incident on the TU.

Skeeter
Yes Jason, I am. I have spent the last 7 yrs. learning how to do this. There has been a ton of hard work and research that has gone into it. The site is here to help people through a problem. And I have done my share. But there are too many others that just want all of the information handed to them without the work. My clients are paying for something that is above the rest, and I bust my chops to give it to them. There is alot more that goes into my crankbaits than just wood and paint. I have heard very good things about your lures, and have seen pictures of fish caught on them. I guess I was just thinking about where I would be without the help of others on here. No offense meant. Hey Frank, I have let it go, and you know what you can do with your crackers and wine. You must be one of the people that come to the site to steal other peoples ideas and have no good one's of your own.
